Disk erase ailed with the error :wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed.

I recently purchased a Toshiba hard disk for my Mac book pro since my hard disk failed, when I try to format it using disk utility during set up, it gives me the following error : DISK ERASE FAILED WITH THE ERROR

WIPING VOLUME DATA TO PREVENT FUTURE ACCIDENTAL PROBING FAILED.

It's a new hard disk which has not yet been formatted at all. Could you please advise on the way forward ?

I tried this solution on my SSD that I can't format, I selected the drive makers name and the options you suggest but I still get the error message "Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed."

I used the SSD as OSX drive yesterday but suddenly I couldn't boot from it. So I successfully installed Yosemite on my other internal drive instead and copied some files from the SSD to an external drive and then tried to fully format the SSD. But that's where I'm stuck. Any suggestions on how to format it?

Thank you ds store, for the tips and tricks. They worked for me fortunately.

From a faulty Mac Mini I pulled to HD's that were formatted as a RAID 0 array. In order to use them in a MacBook Pro and in an external USB case I tried reformatting and repartitioning both drives. Both attempts failed with the mentioned error.

At first the MBR partitioning failed as well, until I attached 1 drive to the main internal SATA cable of the MB Pro. Booting from an external disk and then formatting to MBR and then GUID/HFS+ Journaled, succeeded. After that I repeated the trick for the second drive and this too succeeded.

Apparently, it is imperative to hook the drive that needs to be formatted, up to the main internal SATA cable.

I had the same problem (or so it seems) as everyone here. Put a new WD 1TB drive in a 4-bay external enclosure connected through a new SATA/USB3 bridge board to my 2014 Mac Mini. I couldn't get the drive to partition, tried some of the suggestions here, no go. So…

I connected the drive through the USB2/Firewire 800 bridge already in the enclosure and to my mini thru USB2. The drive partitioned with no problems normally.

Hooked the drive back up through the USB3 bridge and it mounted normally, seems to be OK. Will post an update if I end up having problems later.

I was having trouble with a drive/system on my Macbook Pro that registered as working normally (SMART) but was doing really wonky things with copying, moving, or erasing. I bought a new drive and installed it but when I try to partition the drive it says "Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed." I used disk warrior recovery disk and terminal to run the command DiskUtil list. It properly shows the the new drive (/dev/disk1)and the disk warrior volume (/dev/disk2). However, it also lists 12 other disks of varying sizes all the way to disk14.

I zapped the PRAM and ran the battery dry to see if the list changes. I ran terminal again and the same disks show up and the same error obtained ("Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed."). I am guessing that the disks 3 through 14 are preventing the mounting of my new drive (disk1).

Any thoughts?

Hello,

I am computer illiterate at the best of times and after being up all night organising and editing a customers photos after a 2 week boat trip I managed to make a fatal error. It was 5am and they were trying to leave to get flights so in my sleepy state I plugged my toshiba mac formatted external hard drive into a windows PC to speed up the process as I had ten people waiting and a lot of file transferring going on. Nothing showed up on the windows lap top when I plugged in my hard drive and I dont remember clicking anything although it is possible I could have clicked away or on a pop up message in an impatient panic. It said that the drive could not be read so I safely removed USB and then when I plugged it back into my mac it was empty, I lost all my photos and all info on the drive. Very tragic, but I am hoping it can be un-done I have not touched it since. Any ideas? I dont want to touch it myself, I am too scared!!!!!! 😟
