HDMI On Mac Mini Late 2012: Problem with hardware?

Have you checked the display mode from your monitor's setting? If there is a input mode setting, please confirm it is set to "PC", not "TV" as input source.

Thanks for the reply. I was browsing my monitor's settings last night and that option doesn't sound familiar. I'll double check for it when I get home, though.

You're freaking awesome. I went back and double checked my monitor's settings and I must have over looked that option. I found it, and switched it to PC. All my troubles have vanished!!!!

Usually there is an advance setting section in your display menu. Depends on brand and made, it can be different. Look for "input source"

You will need to download the manual specific for your TV. They are all different.

On the back of your TV one of the HDMI ports should say something like HDMI / DVI or HDMI / PC. You will need to be plugged into that one for it to work.

My picture got little better by forcing it to RGB mode.

I don't know what kind of monitor you bought, but I have a mac mini (2012 model) and I just got a new HP 22bw monitor this weekend. It too looked awful when I turned it on with a connection via HDMI. Thanks to a review on Best Buy, I found that there is a setting on the monitor under "Image Control", "Custom Scaling", "Overscan", the Overscan needs to be turned OFF. Once I did that, the image quality was great. I don't know if you have a monitor with an "Overscan" setting, but if you do, that may be the problem.

Thanks Jani. This worked for me also. I have a LG m2280a. When I connected it for the first time in a late-2012 mac mini with HDMI cable the fonts was really blurry and the image was cutted (the top and bottom was "outside" the screen area).

After follow all the steps of this post the fonts are now totally fine and the image fits perfectly in screen (1080p) using the HDMI cable. Just 2 considerations about the steps.

1. Probably you will need to use the sudo command to copy the files. Instead of just use cp origin destination, use sudo cp origin destination.

2. After restart your computer I opened the System Preferences and in Displays option i changed my resolution to something really small (like 800x600) and then to resolution i wanted (1920x1080). Just after this the image becames OK.

It's really bad that Apple doesn't fix this problem. It's not an HDMI cable problem, or a monitor problem, or even a driver problem. A little hack fix the issue. But, if I want to do hacks to fix this kind of problems I will propably buy a PC and install some kind of Slackware Linux.

😎 Cool, I did it, I change the name of the HDMI in my TV, and I use the mode PC or DVI/PC and that is all.

I didn't need to make any change on my Mac, the computer is OK the TV only need to know what kind of device are you using on the HDMI.

I also have MM 2012 and HD Monitor with VGA and HDMI only (no DVI port). Can you explain - how to connect a HDMI-DVI Adapter (supplied by Apple along with MM) and a MDP-DVI adapater (by purchasing seperately) to my monitor, which has VGA & HDMI only and no DVI port?

I have exactly the same monitor has you. The fault is the HDMI Port Apple and Intel have owned up this,and they have issued an EFI Firmware Update 1.7 to fix this issue.

That's odd because if you go to install this patch as you noted, an alert pops up and states "this software is not supported on your system." My Mac Mini is a late model 2012. This was released Dec 2012 and certainly even trying to apply it last year did not make a bit of difference.
