HDMI On Mac Mini Late 2012: Problem with hardware?

Just converted from PC to Mac.

Purchased latest mac mini (Late 2012 version)

Have tried several monitors through HDMI port and each time the picture quality is poor with very bad text resolution.

Have tried HDMI to HDMI and also tried HDMI to DVI adaptor.

This is with full 1080p 27 inch samsung monitor and HP 2010i monitor.

Is there a problem with the HDMI port on this new mac mini?

The monitors I have are fine and are crystal sharp when connected to PC.

Many thanks if you can answer this

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Hello , I have a Mac Mini Late 2012 I7 connected to an AOC 2757M which have 2 HDMI inputs and 1 VGA input.

I have tried HDMI to DVI with no succes, and I have tried Minidisplay port to HDMI with no succes. Hence , the only solution to this blurry output is buying the thunderbolt display .

Or is there any update regarding INTEL HD4000 adapter?

This is not the quality i aspected to get from Apple, I am a new Apple user. Hope there will be an update soon.

I just bought the new mac mini last night and I've been having issues with the constrasts and the whites being blown out on my lcd tv monitor. I've been through a lot of forums and nothing seems to help out. I can't even see the text very well thus making it hard to read. I've calibrated the colors a dozen times and it does not work. The first thing I did was update to 10.8.3 and it also does not work. The monitor I am using does not have a dvi port and it only has one hdmi input jack.

I am very dissapointed right now as I am a photographer that needs to have the right colors on the screen in order to be able to edit pictures.

Please help!!

I bought a Mac Mini yesterday after my faithful Power Mac G5 suddenly died. After hooking up the Mini to my Samsung HDTV monitor (which always brought me a fine quality together with the G5), I was simply shocked by the screen quality (fuzzy text, a blueish screen with no pure whites, frightening colors of photographs, etc. etc.). I was about to throw the Mini out of the window when I luckily happened to discover this discussion.

BUT I have MacOS 10.8.4 and the problem with the HDMI connection evidently is still persisting. Everybody in this thread has been talking about upgrades which were supposed to solve the problem - but that was last year and with OS 10.8.2. I have been using Macs for 25 years now and have never encountered such a bad image on any monitor screen. Please Apple, what is happening here and what can I do?.

have you tried this

have not been following the threads. Just got my Mac Mini today and plugged into a Samsung Smart tv 42".

HDMI > HDMI with an Apple bought cable looked awful. Text blurry etc...

The solution, at least for Samsung TVs is to set the HDMI port as a DVI port in the settings. This disables the overscan and the screen / image does not need adjusting, just like a monitor. I disabled LCD Text Smoothing as well and that made the text look a lot crisper. You need to use the port marked HDMI / DVI on the back of the TV, the other ports are just HDMI.

You can see how to do this on a Samsung here

Its not the easiest option to find. Maybe other TVs have the HDMI / DVI markings showing which HDMI port to use. In settings look for a PC Mode or DVI Mode. A few different TVs allow such settings.

Thank you, but after trying out a substitute non-Apple HDMI cable without success this morning and having the Mac mini tested by my local Apple dealer (result: everything fine concerning the hardware), we came to the conclusion that the problem must be somewhere within the HDMI connection. The dealer's staff thus sold me a combination consisting of

- an Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor, plus

- a DVI male/male cable

and this somewhat strange looking setup now works beautifully. However, I can't help remaining surprised why such an issue with HDMI apparently can't be solved by Apple (or whoever else is to blame) within many months.

Similar to Holzbock, my new Mini (6,1 / A1347)) running 10.8 finally connected to a new LG TV that had HDMI in but no DVI in, using these two connections:

- the Apple Mini DisplayPort to female DVI adapter MB570Z included with the Mini

- a DVI male to HDMI adapter cable, Dynex DX-C114193

The DVI-HDMI adapter cable came from Best Buy; it is cheaper elsewhere if you are not in a hurry. This has been running for a week.

I had 5 minutes of success with a Gigaware Mini DisplayPort to HDMI (+ DisplayPort + DVI) adapter. Wierd.

[SOLVED]

I had the same issue. Mac mini 2012 and SAMSUNG SyncMaster PX2370 display.

1. HDMI to HDMI, bad

2. HDMI to DVI adaptor to DVI on PX2370, good

The problem is that my Samsung display treated HDMI as TV input. Once I switch the HDMI input to PC mode from Samsung display. The problem is gone. Obversed no difference between method 1 and 2.

I don't disagree that you can fix it by using the stocked HDMI to DVI adaptor, the way I think is if it is designed as an output, it should work. so for my this is not a Mac mini problem, rather a setup issue. I don't know if the HDMI signal from Mac mini is capable or should tell my Samsung display, you should treat my like a PC not TV.

Just got a mac mini 2012 this week and have the blurry text issue. Colors look correct, but the text is fuzzy and washed out. I've heard people defend Apple and claim that this is the way their text is rendered and it's something a mac user will get used to. I've used a 2006 mini for years, upgraded to a 2009 mini and used that for years, and now just upgraded to the 2012 mini. From 2006 - until this week, I never had a fuzzy, text issue until I plugged in my 2012 mini. My monitor isn't equipped with a DVI connection; only an HDMI. I also have the most recent updgrade installed.
