HDMI On Mac Mini Late 2012: Problem with hardware?

Just converted from PC to Mac.

Purchased latest mac mini (Late 2012 version)

Have tried several monitors through HDMI port and each time the picture quality is poor with very bad text resolution.

Have tried HDMI to HDMI and also tried HDMI to DVI adaptor.

This is with full 1080p 27 inch samsung monitor and HP 2010i monitor.

Is there a problem with the HDMI port on this new mac mini?

The monitors I have are fine and are crystal sharp when connected to PC.

Many thanks if you can answer this

This is obviously a known problem which Apple haven't fixed.

I sent my Mac Mini off for repair, and according to the repair centre, there's nothing wrong with the HDMI output. Utter balls. Apple's customer service was pretty useless too, pretty much claiming there's a fault with my monitors/tv's

VGA output is miles better than HDMI.

Once I get my Mac returned I'm returning it for a refund.

Linux here I come.

Hey All,

I've found the fix for Samsung TVs by searching some other forums and trying multiple combinations of cables and settings. I had the same problem with grainy text on a mid 2011 Mac Mini when using either the HDMI port or Thunderbolt and it turns out that the problem is not with the Mac. I have a Samsung 24" HDTV w/ two HDMI ports. Using the remote edit the source name to DVI, DVI/PC, or PC--problem solved!

Side note, if using DVI or DVI/PC I was not able to send audio through the HDMI cable, this was only availale when PC is chosen.

Hope this helps!

Unless I've missed a post I can't see anyone with exactly the same problem as me. When I turn on the monitor displays the message 'No cable connected'. The Mac Mini appears to be on as the startup sound plays and the indicator light is on. The monitor works fine with my old Windows laptop using the D-sub port. I don't have an HDMI port on the laptop so I can't check with that. I'm going to have to go back to the Apple Store by the looks of things.

Me too. I just bought a MacMini about a month ago, having waited in vain to see if there was going to be a new 2014 model in June (there wasn't). The HDMI output to my Sony Bravia KDL26EX302U was excellent from my MacBook Pro, but is completely hopeless from the MacMini, with any kind of adapter, whether directly from the HMDI port or from the Thunderbolt port using a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter.

If I had known about this I probably would not have bought a MacMini but now it looks as though I'm stuck with it, unless Apple (a) acknowledges that there is a problem (b) releases a fix for it.

The answer to this is that Apple, and Intel have both admitted that their is a fault with the HDMI Port.

They have issued a Mac Mini EFI Firmware Update 1.7 This addresses the fault with the HDMI Port late 2012,but it is advisable

for all Mac Mini`s.

Having said that the download is not very reliable because their is quite a large number of people that it hasn`t worked for.

One guy said it didn`t work I might has well use it has a door stop.

A woman went further she said she is going back to a PC.

I am using a Mac Mini off 2007 to type this out.

I am waiting for the new Mac Mini to come out it has been nearly 19 months since the last new Mac Mini.

I bought an iMac which was faulted.

I went through 3 iMacs, and the screen was replaced I lost count how many.

That`s why I would not touch an iMac with a barge pole.

That`s why I am not buying this Mac Mini,so you have tried this download and it doesn`t work.

If I was to buy this new computer I would have to do this download after I bought it,and in my eyes that`s wrong.

Both Apple and Intel have admitted this issue, and you are quite right that Apple should not allow

this defective product out of the door.

I Googled it,and found out just like you that it didn`t work.

Comment`s like "I might has well use it has a door stop"

"I am going back to a PC"

"They should have put it right before shipping"

I could fill the page with comments like these.

I was going to buy it from PC World, and I mentioned this issue.

The reply was it`s guaranteed for a year.

I replied you should not be selling them with this issue.

The download is definitely for the late 2012 computer`s,and his recommended

for all computer`s.

That`s Apple`s very words.

So you are another one that it doese`nt work for. Here are some of the comments.

It doesn`t work I might has well use it has a door stop.

I am going back to a PC.

They should have put this right before shipping.

I am not a technician.

I could fill the the page with comments like these.

I am using a Mac Mini off 2007,and I am waiting till the new one comes out?

I went through 3 brand new iMacs with a fault issue with the screen.

I was refunded £1.213 eventually!

I bought this MacMini because my guess is that there will not be a new model. My instinct is telling me that inside Apple there's a debate on what to do about the MacMini - discontinue it or upgrade it? I think they'll decide to discontinue it.

I'm happy with this new MacMini in every way except for what appears to be the defective HMDI output.

I don't really understand what's wrong with it because as I said in a previous post, the picture quality on my SonyTV was perfect when I was taking the HDMI signal through the MiniDisplay port on my old MacBook Pro, via an adaptor (the MBP doesn't have an HDMI port),

But with the MacMini, even when I'm not using theHDMI port but use a Thunderbolt->HMDI adaptor, i.e. when the signal is coming through the Thunderbolt port and not the HDMI port, the picture quality on my SonyTV is terrible.

Can anyone explain why?

Jul 16, 2014 1:10 PM in response to Tom in London

I agree their might be a debate going on about the Mac Mini.

They are giving you Mavericks for nothing later this year.

Apple could scrap the iMac make the Mac Mini a couple of inches taller, and of course make the monitor cheap.

Tim Cook was promising all sorts this year, but I havn`t heard anything dramatic.

I can explain it to you the chip which Intel made for this Mac Mini was faulted.

Hence the Download to fix it,but it hasn`t.

I have heard lots of cases like yours how to get round it.

I would Google it. It`s all to do with the connecters and they connect it using a VGA cable with the HDMI connecter that goes into your

Mac Mini with the VGA connecter into your monitor.

If you look on Apples site they sell the connectors.

I am not technical minded that`s why the HDMI port doesn`t work you are still using a HDMI Adaptor through the Thunderbolt port

to your computer. I will ask my son and try to get a simple explanation off him.
