what happened to "save as"?

I don't use the mountain lion computer for much besides facebook, but when i do the 'save as' function seems to be gone.

is there a way to restore this basic computer function?

why would it be gone?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), 27" i5

That's just it. Autosave doesn't seem to work that well. I find it quirky. I haven't been able to depend on it. Even though everything seems to indicate that my changes have been autosaved, they end up not having been saved at all when I go to close the window. Up comes the window demanding that I save one image file's change after another. As the old saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," right?

And other non family friendly words. 🙂

I don't, and won't use any app that uses autosave. I put up with Preview as it is since I never use it for editing, only Preview-ing. If I do make change in Preview, the setting changes I outlined cause it to ask if you want to save the changes when you close a file. That gives you the opportunity to click Revert Changes, which in the end result, is the same as the older Don't Save.

For TextEdit, with Lion through Mavericks, I delete the version that comes with those OS X versions and use TextEdit from Snow Leopard. It doesn't understand autosave and works the way you're used to apps behaving.

Save as has been brought back. It stinks, but it's back. You have to hit the option button.

I'm in agreement with everyone that thinks Apple has severly been downgrading the GUI since Snow Leopard. The lack of scroll bar arrows has driven me to buy a *shudder* cheap Dell, just to increase the speed of my work flow. I have no idea why they thought taking away Save As was a good idea, it was moronic, but at least they sort of brought it back.

I think they've let the sales department dominate the engineering department (and yes, this was going on in the latter Jobs era too, so don't just blame the new guys). Sales wants to sell those horrible magic trackpads, so engr has to hamstring anything that makes the mouse work easy. Problem is, trackpads are less exact than mice, so the net effect is a downgrade in productivity. They are NEVER going to catch up to windows if they keep thinking like that! The lack of 'save as' was to make your mac work like an iPad (in theory boosting iPad sales -- but in reality just making me wonder if I shouldn't become one of the growing number of "Switchers back.")

I've been a hard core believer in the mac for more than a decade, but they are losing me very quickly.

So why tell us, we can't change it.

If it matters to you, tell Apple

Why be a troll. Is this not a forum for problems?

You are addressing other users of Apple equipment, not Apple. We are volunteers and this volunteer could not care less about how you feel. And couldn't rewrite Apples software to your liking even if he did.

But if you wish to spend your time complaining to no avail you should keep on complaining in the wrong place.

Did you read my post on the first page of this topic? If you follow the steps I outlined, Save As will return to its normal position at both the OS level, and across all apps. It's possible to do that in Mountain Lion and Mavericks because so many users complained about it in Lion. No, Apple didn't bring it back as the default, but they did make it possible.

The steps will also (essentially) prevent autosave from saving your files without your consent because when you close your documents, you get the opportunity to choose Revert Changes. The other steps stop the iPad like behavior of opening all of the apps and documents you last had open when you startup or restart.

Everything you dislike can be undone by following the steps in that post. The only thing it doesn't, and can't do, is truly turn autosave/versions off for apps that use it. But you can at least revert to the open state when you close a document if you decide you do not want any of the changes you made saved.

Gee, thanks for your valuable time. You almost make it sound like your trolling is a gift I should thank you for. But I know who I'm addressing and I know how the market works and how change happens, so why don't you volunteer some silence?

Will do. That is a bit of advice I will take!

Actually, I like autosave. I like that "Save As" is back. I would like the option for both.

Then it comes back to the steps I outlined. The main keyboard change puts Save As back as Command+Shift+S, like it had been for decades. No need to press the Option key. If an app supports autosave, it will still do that. The changes do not turn it off.
