Partition update failed

Hello,

So I used a BOOTCAMP partition to run Windows 7 for a while, but I didn't need it anymore, so I deleted it with Disk Utility.

This partition is about 50 gb and I needed some extra space on my disk.

Now when I tried to make my Macintosh HD larger by drag the current box downside and apply it, it says, translated, that 'the partition has failed' and that it is because of 'the partition table cannot be changed because the control of the file system has failed'.

What should I do?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

The data is not 'that' important, but you know, it's not funny when it get lost.

So I'll make a clone with CCC, following the exact steps the instruction guide says and then I come back.

Only 11gb done, this is gonna take a while 😝

I know it's off topic, but it's a question I've wanted to ask for a while now.

Here a picture of my hard drive space. In dutch but that doesn't matter, I'm belgian btw.

So it says there's almost 84gb (yellow) of something I have no clue about. In english it'll probably say 'Other'. Could you maybe explain what it is exactly?

The clone will take a while, be patient, and yes, your drive is very full, it will need replacing with a larger one.

And any idea what the yellow part 'Other' contains? And if there are things I can delete in general? Is there also a cleaning program for mac that's reliable?

I'm already asking too much questions, but I don't know any people who knows a lot about macs.

I personally hate the Other category because it doesn't tell you anything.

I usually suggest OmniDiskSweeper to find out what is on the disk. It will tell you the files and folders that are taking up the most space so that you can either delete them or move them to another disk.

General advice is to keep 15% of the HD free so OSX has some play-room for routine operations and virtual-memory.

But if you buy a 1 TB drive, 150GB free is possibly wasteful. But some people like to keep 30% free regardless of the HD size just based on experience.
