When I attempt to upgrade an app in iTunes for windows, I get an error: "Could not purchase. An unknown error occurred (11111). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later"

I am running the latest iTunes 10.7.0.21 for Windows 7.

This error occurs if I try to either update the app or if I delete it and attempt to redownload.

I have an iPhone and an iPad. I am unable to update the apps or install the apps from within the App Store on iOS.

I do not have an AOL ID, as is a common issue with this type of error.

From what I can tell, my Apple ID account seems fine. I logged in, changed some information, and ensured my credit card is valid and updated.

I can download new apps just fine. I am unable to update or install apps I have purchased in the past.

Hello,

I've just received a first reply by Apple support, it's quite good news IMHO:

"XXXX here, from iTunes. I'm sorry to learn you encountered error 11111 when trying to update the various apps from your iTunes Store Account. I can certainly appreciate how eager you are to have this issue addressed and I would be happy to share information with you.

It appears many others have encountered this error and difficulty. Our engineers are currently investigating the issue and working on a resolution. As soon as additional information has been made available, I'll be sure to pass it along.

Many thanks for your support and understanding, YYYY! It's very much appreciated!"

So, as I hoped it's a widespread issue unlike similar issues in the past which were dealt with one by one, case by case. The Store is too critical for Apple to leave such a bug open for a long time. Fingers crossed everyone!

Update: This appears to be a server-side issue on Apple's end. Connecting from an AT&T LTE connection gives the same results as wi-fi. I was eventually able to update a few apps, but it's hit & miss.

I've already rebooted all devices, changed my billing information, signed out of all devices, made sure iTunes is updated, signed in/out with iTunes.

You can (apparently) improve your chances of updating by:

Settings > iTunes > Click AppleID and Sign Out

Make sure the App Store app is NOT running in the background (double-tap home, and click/hold to remove)

Open the App Store, and attempt to update the FIRST app in the queue (sometimes Update All works as well)

It will ask for your password. If it fails the first time, try 5-10 more updates. Then, give up, and start over Signing Out again.

This seems to produce better results then just repeatedly clicking on an Update button repeatedly, but eventually that seems to work as well (20+ clicks?) YMMV, and honestly, this "Sign out" dance above may only *appear* to help things. The main reason this approach might improve results, is that the App Store app may *cache* results, and signing out may force it to start clean. My guess is there's some bad data or code on many of Apple's load-balanced web servers, and just takes a high number of attempts to get lucky and hit a server that's not affected.

My suggestion: If you have the time, continue to call Apple support.

Glad to finally see that I am not losing my mind and/or the only one having these issues. Not that I would want to wish this on anyone, but I have just spent the past two days trying to figure out what the heck is going on.

Same here - Iphone 4s, Iphone4 and Ipad - can not update Apps and getting 11111 error on ITunes - I have uninstalled and reinstalled and have done everything that I can think of.

Hope it gets resolved - I have 36 apps needing updating on the phone.

When I attempt to upgrade an app in iTunes for windows, I get an error: "Could not purchase. An unknown error occurred (11111). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later"
