are you using 8.1 32-bits, or 64-bits? I'm using a 32-bit operating system. I've had to reinstall the operating system 4 times since i got it, due to completely unrelated issues, and every single time I've installed iTunes by going to itunes.com and downloading from there using google chrome. I have never once had any issues with itunes on windows 8, or windows 8.1, and I use it every day. This is without the paid upgrade to the windows 8 media center.

To find out if you're using a 32-bit, or 64-bit version of windows 8.1 professional, go to your desktop, right click the start button, and click "System" in the menu that appears. On the window that opens, next to System Type, it will tell you whether it is 32-bits, or 64-bits.

64-bit windows 8/8.1 users may have more difficulties than 32-bit users. I have never actually tested iTunes on a 64-bit version of windows 8, or 8.1. My specs are below, and again I've never had any problems with itunes on my windows 8 computer.

CPU - Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.00 GHTz

RAM - 4.00 GB (3.50 usable)

Operating system - Windows 8.1 Professional

System type - 32-bit operating system

If you're using a 64-bit operating system try this http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes and download the latest 64-bit version of itunes. This may possibly resolve your issue.

I'm using the 64 bit and when I load the 64 bit itunes, I try to install it but it keeps on telling me that another program is currently using the file. I don't know for sure what program is using it. I don't know if the program called bonjour is the problem. Also, when I close out the apple page on the internet, the itunes64Setup icon disappears.

What I did to resolve the problem is. I have Windows 8.1 on a 64 bit system. I went to the internet and typed in www. Google.com/chrome and downloaded it to the desktop. Then I opened it up and signed in and then I went to the address that jasoncollege24 gave you and downloaded the itues 64 bit to the desktop. Then I clicked on the icon labeled iTunes 64 bit installer and it will install it and open it from there.

Please note that in order for the 64-bit version of itunes to be successfully installed, you will need to uninstall the 32-bit version first. You can use the revo uninstaller (just google tht, download and install it) to remove the old itunes version (select uninstall type 4 when prompted, and make sure you delete everything it finds), then run the 64-bit installer.

If prompted by itunes uninstaller to restart your computer, choose to restart later, or revo's uninstall will fail. After revo has completed, restart your computer to remove any files that might have been in use, then run the 64-bit installer as normal.

This should resolve your issue.

As a rule of thumb, if a program has a 64-bit version available, and you're using a 64-bit operating system, always install the 64-bit version

Thank you so much. This worked! I spent 2 hours yesterday on the phone with Apple support and 6 hours yesterday on the phone with Microsoft support($99) and they couldn't figure out why iTunes wasn't opening.

"Officially supports" doesn't correlate to reality here. Just downoaded the latest version of iTunes for W8 and it's behaviour is no different than previous versions. I'm done trying and am looking for alternatives to iTunes for my mobile apple devicces. Any suggestions?

It does support all versions of Windows 8. You simply have to install the proper one for your version. If you have any previous version of iTunes installed, you should completely remove it, and reinstall the proper one for your version of windows (32-bits, or 64-bits) using the steps I've outlined above. It is recommended that you not skip any of the steps I've given, or your installation may not function properly.

I'd suggest you avoid 3rd party uninstallers if you can.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

While these steps may help, the only reason I recommend using Revo Uninstaller to remove the previous version is that it completely removes all traces (except your itunes library) of the iTunes installation, thus removing the chance that any old installed files, or registry entries will interfere with the installation of the proper version.

I've learned to be wary of over-zealous clean-up tools, but I should probably take a look at it and see how ell if performs. There are some settings files and registry entries that, ideally, would be left untouched.

I tried the Revo Uninstaller under the "advanced" registry cleanup setting, rebooted and re-installed iTunes (64-bit) for Windows 8.2 but it still froze almost immediately. It launched but when I selected Help/About to check the version number it froze and I used Task Manager to kill it.

The odd thing is that in the Task Manager app listing it says that iTunes (32-bit) is "not responding."

Not sure where to go from here.

Revo Uninstaller only removes what the installed program had added, as well as registry entries associated with that program. I've been using it for a long time, and it has never damaged anything within my operating systems. (XP/Vista/7/8/8.1)

If you didn't download the latest version of iTunes (64-bits) from the link I gave above, it's highly likely that you installed the wrong version. Apple doesn't have a 64-bit link for itunes on their main public download page. You have to get it from the link i provided above.

The file itself should be iTunes64Setup. If you have file extensions visible, the extension is exe. If you installed from the file iTunesSetup.exe, then you installed the 32-bit version, and will need to start the process from the beginning.

Even on 64-bit systems the main iTunes application is a 32-bit component.
