Hotmail won't launch from MSN Messenger in Safari

[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; Please start a new topic about your technical issue. ]

I can no longer access my Hotmail account from MSN Messenger (V5.1.1). This has only happened since the latest update. When I click on the mail icon in Messenger Safari goes in to a spin. I eventually am asked for my Hotmail password then Safari goes in to another spin and I keep getting asked for my password. Other browsers (Camino and Opera) are OK. Any thoughts? Do we have to wait for another update?

ahaaaaa so it's not just me 🙂 this started happening yesterday ... before that safari was working just fine with hotmail ... but now it just goes on in loops and sometimes it asks to enter to password again but never opens up ... must be something to do with hotmail's new live thingie ... but i don't think anyone over there MS will hear us ... the heck with them ... i'll just keep popping my hotmail using Entourage, which im sure they wont mess with because it's their own product ... repeat after me ... **** you gates!!!!!

Hello voided & all. Welcome to Apple Discussions~!

In order to work with MSN and be able to log out (& perhaps sign in ?) your

cookies in Security Tab-> Safari Preferences have to be set on Always, it

might help if you do that, then after you log out , you can set cookies back

to "accept only from websites you visit", I also delete the multitude of cookies

they apply. Logging into hotmail, through MSN might work better for you

also. Safari doesn't sign out of MSN, even though you click Sign Out

Thought this might help. Please let us know, thanks.

What do you mean by log out? Do you mean logging out of MSN, or Logging out of my user account on my computer? Should quitting Safari do the trick? So far I've been able to get it to work once or twice randomly, but adjusting those cookie preferences didn't seem to do anything. Do you know what this "live" stuff is all about? What exactly is it doing? thanks

Hi, Lewis, corgi

You are welcome.
I do not know what this live stuff is all about, with MS in general. I think that it might be a good idea for the time being to log into MSN through Safari Browser & log into hotmail that way, If you then want to log out of the web mail hotmail MSN reguires that you have cookies.etc as I posted. so you can log out of hotmail. I do not have a paid account but rather a free passport account. If you do have a paid account, I would think you can still log in this way, as a work around, till you perhaps talk to them.
The cookies must be set to ALL before you log in.

I go to http://www.msn.com/ click on My MSN, then Hotmail.
Hope this helps.

I am glad that I am not the only one with this problem. I have reset safari, emptied cache, deleted cookies, un/reinstalled msngr 5.1.1, went into preferences for msngr and made sure the box was not checked to ask for password, and I also clicked the box to remember login & passoword on hotmail login screen. Don't know what else to do. I run adium sometimes, but other friends run msngr, so I can not do file xfer, etc. Adium is easy to use, but I am used to msngr. If anyone has a solution, please post it. Thanks in advance.

I have tried all the above fixes and nothing worked ... funny enough it happened just like that out the blue ... even before I updated MSN messenger to 5.1.1 and without any apple software updates ... very odd indeed ... but what i found especially ineterting is that I did email MSN hotmail support thinking it has something to do with them and this is what I got ... I hopewe can get an answer from apple ...
