Hotmail won't launch from MSN Messenger in Safari

[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; Please start a new topic about your technical issue. ]

I can no longer access my Hotmail account from MSN Messenger (V5.1.1). This has only happened since the latest update. When I click on the mail icon in Messenger Safari goes in to a spin. I eventually am asked for my Hotmail password then Safari goes in to another spin and I keep getting asked for my password. Other browsers (Camino and Opera) are OK. Any thoughts? Do we have to wait for another update?

Hello,

I'm having the same problem. I've noticed that I can access via Safari by going to the "Preview the New MSN.com" link first, then clicking on Hotmail. Perhaps this has something to do with MSN transitioning to a new home page?

I'm getting it on all 3 Macs, of varying versions of OSX, so I'm still banking on it being an MSN problem. But, a fix would still be nice. 🙂

Have you tried the work around by going to msn sign in-> sign into hotmail or msn messenger.
Did you ask what your other option for a browser is, do they support Firefox, Camino, Shira, Omniweb or are they going to update their IE browser??
Oh, thats right they stoppted support for that. Their service, is this all the support they offer, Safari is the problem.

But, a fix would still be nice. 🙂

Or update their IE & support their clients that use macs, that would be novel
sci.fiction;~))

Sincerely
Safari user, hotmail user.

I have tried all the fixes mentioned above and then some ... or did i ???

I'm not sure if this is just pure luck or not ... but I decided today to change ISP ... dialed into a new ISP and long and behold ... hotmail now works 🙂

so in conclusion apologies to Mr. Gates and to Mr. Jobs ... I didn't mean to cause you any pain ... I'm not worthy please forgive me?

Gonna try dialing my old ISP again to see if it was really the root of this evil 🙂

Well, it's still doing it to me and it's everywhere I'm at, regardless of ISP. I suspect it has something to do with the new MSN Live features being incompatible with Safari. It's a real pain for me and I really hope someone comes up with a solution, and NO, setting the Cookies to Always does nothing whatsoever.

So far all I can do it use Firefox to access it.

I am sorry but setting cookies to Always allows one to Sign
out of hotmail their are some who do not use Messenger but the free Passport Hotmail.

Safari doesn't sign out of MSN, even though you click Sign Out

So you tried signing in http://www.msn.com/ & then into
Messenger and that does not work for you ? So they
make it harder for the paying clients?

Ironically enough just today i I just saw this large van with antennas all over it
with MS Windows live beta (painted on the side) go by, i m think it was scanning for users.

I have the same problem too and noticed something when I play around with it. You can log in into Hotmail using Safari whenever MSN Messenger is not connected. Once you connect MSN Messenger you won't be able to login to Hotmail via Safari anymore..even if you have quit your MSN Messenger. But quitting MSN Messenger and restart your Safari will do the trick.

What suppose that mean?

yep, seems to be a problem on the msn side...
I tried all what you guys did & say and finally, I choose to set my default browser to firefox after importing all stuff from safari (good thing !) all this I have to keep until someone find the answer !

firefox gets me average same results as safari in terms of displaying pages.. but I prefer safari so I hope this will be fixed soon !

MSN Messenger also makes the link ton hotmail inbox now, via firefox being the default browser. everthig is "almost" the same (beside it looks like a boycott to apple's safari(!)

I have the same problem and I have found a temporary solution. You just have to double click on one of your contact wich is not inline. You will be asked if you want to send an e-mail to this contact. By replying yes, you will be able to access your hotmail account from MSN Messenger.

This is the only way I have found to access my Hotmail account from MSN Messenger. I have also sent 3 e-mails to the Microsoft technical support and they don't seem to be informed about that problem.

Hello!

I use a free Hotmail access from passport. The only solution I have found yet is to download Camino. I am a bit sad to leave Safari behind, but I really need to be able to access my e-mails.

As an answer to your question, I didn't try your procedure. And I don't want to modify my preferences everytime I want to access my hotmail account. :S

Thank you for the advice Eme. 🙂

My girlfriend have the exact same hotmail problem on her iMac G3 500 MHz, OS X 10.4.6

Will somebody find a real solution?

Hello M4c4d4m,

You are welcome.
I have Logged in to My MSN , with all three machines listed in my spex & both os 10.3.9 and 10.4.6 & the intel. with no problem what so ever & Safari with cookies to "Always" & "only sites you navigate to" (which I could not log out of properly before with out them set to always).
Sign out of MSN
One user in this thread, Brad found his issue is solved with the applying of the Latest Java update for 10.4.6, it comes up on the SWUPdater, i have not applied that as of yet still no problem.
Safari won't let me check my hotmail account

Will somebody find a real solution?

Try the Java update. You do not have to do anything you do not want, with the cookies preferences as i said, i really do not have a problem, what is the variable ? If voided found an answer his not telling;~))
Good Luck

Hi,

here's something to work around...

first, I know how cookies enabling is important but it seems to have no effect on this problem. I'm sure almost everyone tried it and nobody reports that it's part of a solution.
secondly I realize that (in my case) the problem occurs only when I'm using my old hotmail account (it's more than eight years old), I had frequent errors using safari/MSN with this account. On the other side, when I use an account that is relatively new (about six months) It works perfecly. No matter cookies are enable (set to always) or not.

Seems to be a problem regarding old hotmail accounts.
I experience in the past some connexion problems (on any browser) with this account and when it occurs, my new accounts were working ok. I wrote to msn techs about this two months ago and they told me that was because old hotmail accounts are related to some servers that need to be updated to their new systems... But in that case it was only a temporarly connection problem, not a permanent bug with Safari...

Hope that it will be resolve soon !
