Hotmail smtp.live.com server will not connect

Since yesterday Mail on my iMac will not connect with the Hotmail smtp.live.com server for sending e-mail. Whenever I try and send I get amessage saying the server is offline. I've made no changes to the machine which is running 10.8.2. I've tried deleting and recreating the account -- no joy. I've tried different port settings and SSL is selected I've tried setting up the account on another Mac, still no luck. But setting up Hotmail in Microsoft Entourage works fine. Google mail and Yahoo mail also work fine in Apple Mail.

Can anybody help? Thanks.

Hi,

Im having the exact same problem, email has worked fine since 2008 and on friday it stopped allowing me to send email. I have no problem recieving, or sending from my iphone over the same newtwork my mac is using.

The smtp.live.com server is showing as offline, having tried changing ports, deleting and reinstalling my account.

I no longer have tech support from apple, and have reached the point I no longer have any idea what to try in order to resolve this issue.

Im based in the UK, using snow leopard on a 2008 machine and my service is provided through BT infinity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Phil

Hi Phil,

Looking back over my previous posts I find I had this exact problem in June 2010, but in that instance it fixed itself overnight without any input from me. I suspect this is a Hotmail issue, which can be problamatic at times. I have a feeling we will just have to wait. I guess it could be BT related, as we are both using Infinity...... I'm using a 2009 iMac running Mountain Lion.

I have had the exact same problem over last couple of days. I have BT Infinity. When I switch to a different wifi connection it works fine. I changed nothing on my macbook it just suddenly stopped working. I have tried changing ports for the smtp server, turning SSL on and off but no good.

Below shows what telnet looks like with a working wifi connection and bt infinity (which doesn't)

Working wifi network

telnet smtp.live.com 25

Trying 65.55.162.200...

Connected to smtp.hot.glbdns.microsoft.com.

Escape character is '^]'.

BT Infinity

telnet smtp.live.com 25

Trying 65.55.162.200...

Connected to smtp.hot.glbdns.microsoft.com.

Escape character is '^]'.

220 BLU0-SMTP214.blu0.hotmail.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.4675 ready at Tue, 27 Nov 2012 13:24:15 -0800

Its driving me mad. I will probably try contacting BT next unless anyone has any ideas??

Hi,

yes its starting to drive me mad too, I would have called apple but as my applecare has run out they are asking me to pay £35 + vat which I dont feel I should have to pay.

I have also been getting a response on the link below,

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4546181?answerId=20409573022#20409573022&ac_cid=op123456#20409573

I did try calling the BT infinity help line, where i was told they have limited assistance for mac mail and was promptly passed over to there specialists who wanted me to pay a call out charge.

Having tried a few things this morning it is clearly related to the combination of the BT Infinity BB connection and Apple Mail:

- When I connect wirelessly to BT FON Apple Mail works fine and sends Hotmail with no problem (similar to dw9050's test described above).

- When I use Microsoft Entourage with the BT Infinity connection Hotmail sends OK.

I have tried Apple Mail with BT Infinity both wireless and wired -- no joy on either.

Having looked through some old threads on the Apple Support Communties this problem is something that at least one other person has had within the last few years, and I had myself overnight in 2010 (still with BT but pre Infinity).

So, therein lies madness..........

No luck fixing it, but can see the issue in the connection doctor log.

Tried apple support, they have no idea and after 2hrs we gave up. The issue has been escalated and i'm awaiting a reply.

About to go try sending mail over another wifi connection, ill post the result. Guessing will have much the same result as yourself.

Ok, this is getting weirder. Unlike above I can now send from my macbook via wifi on any connection including my BT Infinity router on my private network as well as BT fon etc. This sprung into life after I rebooted my router and laptop. But I cannot send when I connect my cable to my Macbook. It get the smtp error we all appear to have. So this is increasingly looking like something weird with the BT infinity router. Baffled.

I've tried rebooting my router and laptop a couple of times but no joy.

Untzy's log clearly shows an issue which Apple need to look into I think. I see the same thing....

Ok managed to fix it, try the following.

1. Login to your BT home hub manager (this can be done using the router address located at: system preferences/network/advanced/TCP/IP)

2. Input your router address into the web browser search bar

3. Once on the access page you will need to input your wireless admin password (found on the back of your router)

4. When you are on the home page, you will need to follow the following steps to change your device name:

5. Select "A-Z" in the top right section of the page

6. Click on "Home Network" from the available list of options

7. Click on the Device in question (it should be showing as connected - I identified mine by the mac address, although it was named as 'unknown')

8. Under Device Information, enter a new name (be sure this is memorable in case you need it again)

9. Ensure Always use this address is set to Yes (it is by default)

10. Click Apply.

You will then need to restart your computer - after this, hopefully the problem will be resolved....
