Tried Songbird, at the time of iTunes 11 coming out. Caused a lot of problems. Also Coverstream, same problem. None of them are in the league of iTunes.
I saw Sir Jonny Ives on a BBC Newsnight programe, a rare interview, a few nights back. I was reasured to here his views on design. Hopefully Apple/iTunes will get round to reintroducing Cover Flow again. I'm hoping they surprise us with something like Cover Flow, but a new improved version?
Well, we can live in hope,… can't we?
Come on Apple, bring back Cover Flow?
Songbird can still be downloaded almost anywhere just look around for it.
Version 2.10 Build 2149 is what i use and should still work without any issues.
The last mediaflow extension version was 3.2 and 3.3 both still work perfectly with the max compatibility flag change. If you need help changing that just do a simple google search.
I CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE THE QUOTE BELOW IS A SERIOUS QUESTION!

150 posts ago Songbird wasn't prolly dead yet...
Songbird announced on June 14th 2013 that it will stop all operations and shut down by June 28th. The company was unable to fund further business operations and as a result all operations and associated services will be discontinued.
Any other suggestions?

But the developer has ended all work on it!
You can still get SoundJam here -> http://www.amazon.com/Casady-and-Greene-M1300-SoundJam/dp/B00004U9TG

WHY CAN'T YOU BELIEVE IT?
I'm curious what you didn't like about it ?
Was it because of the way art is displayed in the mediaflow view ?
Because this can be tweaked like i said. POTI (John Marshall) probably didn't release the extension this way because they knew it would infringe on apple and mirrorworlds proprietary rights.

What does that even have to do with anything tho ?!
Its plugin based so any new features you want can still be easily added even if the developer stopped working on it. Part of the source code is also available. Most of mediaflows code is ported firefox and thunderbird code.
It's using XUL if i'm not mistaken.
Are you asking this question just to start an argument?????????????
I swear sometimes i think users here are plants from apple.

What didn't I like about what? I did not write "I don't like" something.

Really?
Its plugin based so any new features you want can still be easily added
How?
Oh, wait. You seem to expect the average dissatisfied iTunes user to simply start writing plug-ins.
I CAN"T BELIEVE YOU THINK THIS IS EVEN REMOTELTY POSSIBLE!
Why are you starting arguments?

huh ? There isn't any plugins to write. The changes that need to be made inside the mediaflow extension are very subtle. Like i said no coding experience is necessary. Please ffs google is your friend.
also: Why are you quoting other users quotes ? This is a little left field. Please read posts in there entirety.
you would see the above response wasn't meant for you.

Changes?
Users aren't going to make "subtle changes" inside some extension.

I am quoting other users (you) so you understand exactly what I am responding to.

How am I supposed to know it's not to me when you clicked on Reply at the bottom of my post? Then the first thing you wrote is, "I'm curious what you didn't like about it ?"
You could click Reply on the post you are actually replying to or address your response to who you are replying to.
Makes it far, far easier to follow along.
My point is users simply want to use something. If they have to compile/code/"make subtle changes" 99.9% of them are not even going to look at it.

If you had read the entire post you can easily see i was replying to KGeez00 eg: "KGeez00 wrote:".
As for the user not making subtle changes i suppose thats up to the user and how much work they want to invest in this.
Personally i think its atleast worth a try. Especially from such a trusted source. And even "out of the box" its still a worth while investment.
Remember Songbird and mediaflow are free so you have nothing to lose.
My problems at the time were numerous.
After the download of the initial iTunes 11, I noticed that the application was freezing every time I changed track, added info… generally freezing every time I tried to use it. I did a permissions repairs and it ran okay. To say I was disappointed regarding the loss of Cover Flow is well documented in this thread.
I looked for an alternative. I tried Coverstream which seemed to be all right at first and worked in tandem with iTunes. However, an iTunes update came along and I had the same problems with iTunes 11 again, sluggish and the constant 5 minute freezes. I contacted my Apple registered service guy who tried to help, he got my Mac working relatively smoothly again. He suggested that if I didn't like iTunes I should give Songbird a try.
As it had been recommended on this thread I reluctantly tried it. It was running well and I was getting used to it but I missed the ease of use of my iTunes, but I persevered and reasoned that I would get used to it.
Along came another iTunes update which I disregard as I was determined to give Songbird a go.
Then Mavericks, (or as the young Apple Care operative let slip "Maver-sick"), came along and it was a complete and utter disaster. Everything stopped functioning all my applications I used to run my business. As these take precedent over iTunes I had to sort them out, quickly.
I had a permissions repair which refused to repair after the Mavericks upgrade. The repair list would have printed out 152 A4 pages at 10pt Helvetica.
After trying to hunt for answers, using my daughters Macbook, I came to hard decision of a complete clean install, all applications from original source. This is a tedious task as you can well imagine, made worse by the discovery that my Time Capsule had been corrupted in the Mavericks upgrade.
I had no alternative. I had to wipe the hard drive clean and re-install a fresh Mavericks OS system, I again did permissions repair and there were loads, this worried me as it was a fresh copy and on a clean head drive.
After doing another permissions repair and having a Disk Utility giving my Mac a clean bill of health, I loaded each application starting with Creative Suite 6 which is my bread and butter. Remember this is all in the pursuit of finding an alternative to iTunes so that I can have a Cover Flow-like alternative.
After each application I did a permissions repair and then finally after 2 days I had a healthy Mac back and working.
Then to load my 400 GB worth of iTunes library which is housed on a 1TB WD external disk.
I was reluctant to reload as the whole library had been corrupted as well. However, I had read somewhere, some time back on a Mac forum, that to remedy this was to copy the file with the iTunes library to new file or external disk, this isn’t guaranteed to always work. I did this and I’m glad to say it worked.
I reloaded my iTunes library and check the permissions. They were clean.
Now forgive me if I sound a little dismissive, but there is no way in **** that I am going to reload some other audio-library application or device that is not native to Mac, especially when I strongly suspect them of creating huge problems for me, also loosing 2 clients in the process as I couldn’t do work for them!
I have to be realistic and put my work first.
The pursuit of an alternative to Cover Flow cost me a lot and I’m not going to jeopardise it again by adding some other dodgy applications that will cost me time and money.
Does that answer your question?
I hope that Apple do reintroduce Cover Flow, but I shall have to wait, as I’m not going to go through this again.

KGeez00 but was there anything specifically with the songbird interface itself acompanied by mediaflow that threw you for a loop ?
You certainly touched on a lot here and thanks for that.
Suppose my question could have been a bit more specific. Sorry about that.
ps:
By the way the core code in songbird IS native to mac and linux.
I've tried Songbird and mediaflow (cover flow equivalent in songbird), honestley ... not even close to iTunes! Ponderously and sluggish and nearly childish. For sure a good approach but not enough.
Nothing for somone who always looking for details design and aesthetics. It doesn't have the professional look and feel of an iTunes!
Good enough for someone with small claims!
I can't comment on its vertices as i have no idea what kind of specs you have.
But as far as childish goes i think you're being a little disingenuous.
Again just my personal opinion here. Others might feel differently.
Curious, how many songs did you import into it ?
Lot's of android users like their phones and tablet and swear by this products. The only reason to act in this way is that those people considering aspects worth I never would.
Same applies to Songbird!
Kenan did you mean to say these* products? I use songbird and mediaflow because i see the potential in itunes 11 going forward and It's a spearhead to a fix for a small problem.
Not because i'm obsessed with firefox and mozilla.
Although i know some who are 😉 😝
I found no problems with Songbird. I was getting used to it and for the short time I used it was a decent replacement for iTunes.
After the huge exercise of doing a clean install and the absolute fear that all my iTunes tracks and albums had been corrupted I was only interested in fixing my ‘problemed’ Mac.
I was warned off of adding anything that could cause the same error issues I had experienced.
Firstly I needed to get my work back on the go, and that was essential.
I was warned by a few Apple Care support people and the registered Apple maintenance guy that I should only load the essential stuff. Later, when I have more time, slowly reintroduce the apps that I had, and after each do a check. This would isolate and point out the application that might be causing me problems. Sort of going back to the early days of computing and uploading applications.
I just couldn’t be bothered as all the peripheral apps are really just fluff and fodder in the main scheme of things with my Mac.
Essentially there was no problem with Songbird, but the fear of have a second occurrence stopped me from reintroducing it. Just being cautious.
Still as my Mac is working, I have resigned myself to using iTunes 11.
I miss Cover Flow and hope that Apple will bring it back.
