As as been repeated many times in this thread, Apple did in fact offer an explanation. Several well-connected tech writers reported that "an Apple spokesman" told them Cover Flow was removed because no one used it. That was an on-the-record explanation reported the day iTunes 11 was released, but it sounded fishy from the beginning.

I guess all these people come under the heading of "No One" uses it according to Apple.

I wonder how many people use the Chess game, or Automator, or Calculator in the applications folder.

Must be way more then people that used to use Cover Flow.

Otherwise they would probably be called "No One" also.

If you doubt Mossberg's reporting and need to have a name of the Apple spokesman, take it up with Mossberg, the Wall Street Journal and All Things Digital. The Apple source was probably Tom Neumayr himself, or at least someone in his department.

I cannot see a useful reason to have the imac be thin wt a hidden disc drive in the side either.Using the logic of their explanation, you might as well, have a huge tower again, wt a removable dic drive. Apple is known for aesthetics, non conformity, and uniqueness. If they thought that cover flow had worn out it's welcome, that's fine, but replace it with a completely unique music payer. For many non apple users, one of the first things they noticed, when they first saw my imac, was the use of coverflow in itunes. Having a virtual jukebox on your desk, was a really cool thing. Apple was well known for itunes, but now that it looks like Windows Media Player, I can see no reason, why a consumer wouldn't purchase an often cheaper WMP music file. Apple and Itunes are synonymous, so when one falls, so will the other. Steve Jobs understood the role music took in the world of Apple, and even proposed high quality music downloads, comparabe wt an LP. With the demise of itunes, Apple could quite possibly soon follow.

Are we just a bunch of lost winers in space where noone hears us...?? I find that hard to beleive...naturally Apple at least knows about this page...checks it out now and then...we are after all discussing their trademark and products here...Or??

Perhaps one should mail the link to this page to someone at Apple support...invite them to comment. This feels absurd, all of us here guessing around...

I'm a very proud whinger (a UK term for moaning and complaining) when it comes to CoverFlow.

I'm one of the many "no-ones' who used CoverFlow ALL THE TIME!

All of my friends, some of them more fanatical about music than me, are "no-ones" who used CoverFlow. They to are whingers.

Apple are taking their financial future onto rocky ground if they are going to ignore us "no-ones".

We "no-ones", are the ones who stuck with them from the start, spending a lot more for quality hardware than all the sheep who went for the cheaper alternatives.

I’m a “no-one” and used CoverFlow.

Ah, I love it when someone is big enough to admit they're wrong. And thanks for the thread bump.

Now if Apple would only admit it was wrong. It does that sometimes.

Here we are, over a year after the release of iTunes 11, and people are still upset at the removal of Cover Flow. Apparently there are lots of users who found it useful.

Any time any new software is released, lots of people whine about it. ["Whinge" for the Brits here.] The complaints seem serious. Then a month or two later those same people get used to the new software and have trouble even remembering what they didn't like about it. Not so with iTunes 11.

Chris has helpfully pointed out many times that Apple has a feedback form; the feedback is actually read by Apple, unlike the posts on this forum. I send feedback in regularly, on the off-chance that Apple considers changing its mind about Cover Flow -- given that "the only reason" it was removed seems to be clearly dubious.

No, I was not wrong in that those are still "possible" reasons (in whole or in part).

Note that I'm not speaking with any authority over why it was removed. I don't work for Apple.

And if people out there are drawn to this thread, because they too, are incredulous that their beautiful and useful and awesome coverflow was taken away in iTunes 11... and they read this thread, and they understand that if they want Apple to hear them... THEN SUBMIT FEEDBACK!! PLEASE, all of you who agree. Do it! For all of us.

If this disccussion was solely to have user to user support available, then I think that goal has been met regarding this topic. Leave Feedback.

Funny you should mention it...I actually added the thread link to my most recent feedback posting! I send comments to Apple about once a week now. 🙂

My thing about losing cover flow is that it's caused me to reconsider my long standing relationship with Apple. I never had to do that before. If other people are feeling the same than that can't be good for business. I don't think it'll lead to a downfall necessarily, but when a diehard user starts looking for alternatives, well...

The more I read here the more I got the impression cover flow isn't killed cause users don't use it (as Aplle stated). It was a kind of tircky "plausible" justification by Apple to do this. Felt are more users desiring for cover flow as Apple says. This thread proofs it!

So I come more and more to the conclusion: the main motivation behind this step is Apples overall approach for flat design driven by poison ivy. Honestly... flat = microsoft!

Jonathan Ive said once aproximatly this sentence that he was not taken seriously by Steve in some aspects. Oh boy... for good reason!
