Guys, after i did a factory restore on the iPad 2, I figured it out that home sharing consumes a lot of ram memory from iOS devices.

i had no problem at all using it because the ipad hasn't any backround app running at this moment. But as soon as i start charging iOS's ram with third party apps, home sharing starts having issues in streaming videos - the macbook's library takes too much to load in the ipad, subtitles hang, and VIDEO APP HANGS too!! Seriously (i can't turn it off, pause, and the audio contitunes playing even when you are off the app)-

When I realised that closing third party apps and leaving only a couple the problem stops, i did the same in my iPhone 4. and Guess what? issue solved.

Seriously Apple, you should advise how complicated home sharing streaming is, or fix the problem of so much ram consuming. I'm aware that iPhone 4 and iPad 2 have 512mb. And the Video App and Home Sharing are apple products this has nothing to do with 3rd party apps.

I had this issue with my ATV3 w/ iTunes 11 on 10.8.2. Using the sleep work around and disabling IGMP snooping on my router seemed to work for me. However, the home share drops still happened at random and unpredictable intervals up until the video being streamed was fully buffered on the ATV. Once a video was fully buffered the home share would never drop. Very annoying for larger files (2GB+) but small (200MB) files buffer quickly (under a minute) so unless the drop occurred in the first minute, all was good. Sometimes it will drop and come back right away. Other times it drops and will not pick up again unless I reboot iTunes (in another room) and the ATV.

Today I decided to go out and buy an Airport Express to see if that would solve the drop problem once and for all. I connected the Airport to the wireless modem my ISP originally provided and the drops have completely stopped now. As for people who are still experiencing home share drops using an Airport to ATV set up I'm interested to know how old your Airport hardware is and whether that is contributing to drops.

For myself, I can confirm that there are now no issues with home share on my Airport to ATV3 set up using iTunes 11. The new Airport Express and set up of a new network has resolved the issue.

can't seem to get apple TV (MD199/LLA) with version 5.2 and Itunes version 11.0.1 to work with Home share. All I can see is my music in the cloud. I cannot (on same LAN) share pictures. When I display computers; neither of my MACs show up. Unlike other posts that have intermintant connectivity; I cant see to connect at all. Any suggestions. Already tried to dissable IPv6 but in this OS; I can only make it LAN only.

I also had an issue with no Home Sharing Connection between my W7 PC running iTunes 11.0.1 and Apple TV. The weirdest thing solved it for me. I have two routers, Apple TV on one, PC on the other. They were both connected via ethernet to their routers and couldn't see each other. However, he Apple TV could get on the internet VIA the router connected to the PC. I decided to connect the Apple TV wirelessly to the router that the PC is on and BAM, it WORKED. I read somewhere Apple says this can be a problem if you have two routers, the the devices on different routers might not be able to discover each other (and they give no solution, and yes, mine are on the same subnet). Anyway, with my fingers crossed, I re-connected the apple TV via ethernet to it's original router and it is still working. For how long, is anybody's guess.

I can't say how many other things I've tried before this worked:

Reset Routers, Re-install itunes, the IPV6 thingy, Firewall disabling, port opening. Nothing, Nada worked.

With:

Windows 8

Itunes 11

ATV 3

Verizon Router MI424WR

I have done these things in order to get Home Sharing to work

First solution was to turn off IPv6

Second was to turn off IGMP Proxy in the routers advnced setting

Third was to swicth my network type to "Broadband" in the advanced wireless options within the router

All of those solutions worked individually for a period of time until either itunes or the ATV was updated.

Thanks All; I was able to resolve it using a suggestion from the post; The two PCs (MAC Pro and MAC Desktop) were connected via CISCO / LINKSYS router WIFI while the APPLE TV was ethernet connected. By changing the router from WPA2 to WPA; both devices were quickly discovered along with their photos and music! I realize it reduces speed / performance but it does not seem to be noticeable.

Same here. Have been trying to find a fix for over a year now with no luck. Have ATV2 ad ATV3 both f which drop out all the time on home sharing. Been happening since iTunes moved from 10 to 11. Have tried all suggested fixes I can find on discussion threads with no luck. It even drops out when I turn my router security off totally so it must be an iTunes bug. I am so amazed that apple have not fixed this yet. Do they not recognise it as a problem? It only happened on iTunes 11. iTunes 10 worked perfectly. Wish there was an easy way to move back to 10. Or that they put out 12 soon and it fixes it. All other aspects of the ATV's work perfectly its just the home sharing, which is the only thing I want them for...! I'm in UK and use BT Home a hub as the router. Any ideas how I could fix it?
