What are your thoughts on the New iTunes 11?

I for one am not very impressed! You lose cover flow, and the ability to resize your album art. Unlike previous versions where everything is not in just one area now your searching over the whole itunes for what you need to do. Its cluttered and instead of just editing one album your stuck at looking at all the other distractions instead of what your trying to edit. What are all of your thoughts on this new itunes?

Command + l (small L) works for me about 80% of the time now. In the beginning it did not work at all. I have a fairly large library, so perhaps there was an indexing issue...?

It don't work in some situation, for me. For example if I select Artist view and "group compilations" in the options it don't work when compilation's song is played, but work if I don't group compilations.

The more I use 11, the less I hate it.

It is ever the same story. Apple change our way to do some things and we must change; sometimes Apple brings good ideas, sometimes is pure arrogance, IMHO.

Just adding my tuppenceworth, should anyone from Apple even be reading...

I also dislike iTunes 11 a lot and would prefer to revert back to my previous install. The fact that so many features are missing and there is no easy 'officlal' way to revert back without the risk of it all falling apart and throwing up errors speaks volumes about Apple and its software, mindset and attitude to customers now.

With this update I have now lost trust in Apple for good and I have now switched off all automatic updates to prevent any further nasty surprises in the future. I'll make sure to delay any upgrades until I have read about them properly in advance. I've always had that policy with my iPhone and versions of iOS, more fool me for having made this mistake in the first place with this software. But you just don't expect an 'upgrade' to rip out features you've become accustomed to. All the more galling to then read marketing guff about 'best ever' - mehhh.

But I suspect this is the beggining of the end for my relationship with Apple. I've read comments in other threads about how fellow users now use Apple because it is the lesser of two evils rather than because of its strengths - yep, I guess I'd say I'm about there now.

One other thing that I am having problems with. I do not wish to download music from "In the Cloud." I have unchecked the box in Preferences -> Store that says "Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases." However, I still have problems with purchases being downloaded. I have also made sure that under View on the Menu Bar "Hide Items in the Cloud" is highlighted. However, after a while, they started to download themselves. This is a complete nuisance. I want a way to permanently disable the Cloud from accessing my iTunes files. This is utter nonsense.

It's pretty easy. I did it in about 10 minutes and I'm no great shakes at anything tecky.

I used these instructions and had no problem whatsoever. I am now back using 10.7 until the dust settles.

OMG it's back!!! No error, no troubles at all. And it is easy.

It's not hard, and all you need is two programs you can luckily use in demo mode (though after this, you may think they're worth purchasing).

Thanks, Airsculpture!

My thoughts:

[BAD]

  • Too features missing:
    1. Cover Flow
    2. The "Beat Box" during play (double click on the main status window, the LCD-like central box, in the iTunes 10 switch between "playing progress bar", "levels visualization" and iPod sync progress bar).
    3. The artworks in the list view.
    4. The ability to drag and drop the CD cover image over a dedicated area for adding artwork to my ripped CD. I don't want to go all the time in "info" and drag here the artwork if I can drag the cover over the little artwork area (like the past, at the bottom left).
    5. The number of time you played some songs
  • The "Artist" is a sort of skimpy old normal view. Some informations was redundant (the year, or the genre of an album, we don't need to read them in each song) but now are missed.
  • Moreover, In the Artist view I don't want to see another sidebar with the alphabetical list of artist, redundant (at right there's ALREADY the alphabetical list and bloated (the artwork here is really pointless).
  • The new icon is less distinguishable and with less contrast; looks nice but in my crowded dock (little icons) can not be easily recognized.
  • View. I miss the buttons for "cover flow - list - icons". I wish to have it in all the new views.
  • Processor use. iTunes is really "hungry and foolish". :-) When idle it take about 40-50% of the processor. But this is an old problem,I upgraded hoping that they are fixing things but ...no.
  • Now it is also too slow to respond to commands. Between the click and the opening of the album (album view, in this example) the time is about a second!!! Same behavior in all the interface

[Good]

  • Return colors in icon's sidebar
  • Album view is better than the past (but light background....)
  • The artist view is better and at the same time worst. In the Artist view the layout is not so bad. Only few things missed (genre of the album and number of time played, for example).

I think this iTunes is more like a beta release. We need to wait for some "snow iTunes" release... :-P

P.S. Apple already tried to impose the light background in the album icon view. Now the guys at Apple have sweetened the pill with visual effects (the expansion of the album by clicking on it is very eye-candy).

Oh, Yes. Coverflow was the only reason I bought a Mac. Otherwise I could have stayed with my PC(s).

Absolutely things like cover flow make apple what it was for mac. now that they are more interested in the istuff type operating systems they are becoming much less innovative and much more jump on the tablet operating system band wagon
