Is it no longer possible to create shuffled playlists in iTunes 11?

Having to shuffle from the iPod is not a viable option for my use cases, which are in the car. My husband and I each have iPods loaded with music that we have in our cars. I'll often create playlists that have a variety of related music and then will want to play in shuffled order. I used to do what was described by the OP: shuffle them in iTunes and transfer the shuffled list to the iPod, where it would "stick". The iPods are generally kept locked in our glove compartments, hooked into the cars' stereo systems, so using the iPod interfaces is a no-go — and unfortunately the car's interface is about 8 clicks into an atrocious interface. We don't wnat to be fiddling with the stereo in the car, we just want to click play and hear the music!

Oh, and when I'm listening to music at work I'll do something similar — grab a bunch of music and hit shuffle. I really miss being able to see the "shuffled" order — I liked seeing what was up next! Now it's all just in the boring no-info list of album-by-artist or whatever.

I recommend contacting Apple feedback athttp://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html. The more people complain, the more likely it is that something will be done about it.

Steve, I have been trying to downgrade from 11 to 10.7 for a month and I had given up, but your post has cleared up some things (replacing the PrivateFrameworks) which other threads did not explain. +100 for that. The downgrade went smoother than the earlier ones, but I get the following error when I enter my password to connect to the itunes store: Error 4002 - Could not complete your request. It doesn't seem to be a big problem, but I am now afraid for my iphone! The last efforts to downgrade led to all my apps being wiped off and unable to download anything from the itunes store. Has anyone here experienced this error? thanks to all for your help.

My issues with ver 11 were not with shuffle problems, I don't use that feature. Many other undesirable changes have been made in itunes - the web is full of complaints. Cover flow, search, the way it displays music, etc, etc. No previous Apple software has had so many trying to downgrade. I really hope Apple get the message and fix these issues asap. Else I for one will seriously start looking for alternatives to apple in my life, as I successfully did with microsoft over 15 years ago.

I am a bit late to realize I just lost my shuffled lists on my iPod Classic. I don't understand the strategy Apple is following with iTunes 11. It just seems all more confused. A playlist on the iPod Classic should be shuffled, otherwise there is not really a need for a playlist. So, Apple ... please, I beg you, don't delete usefull options and please, give us back this feature !!!!!

Me again, in connection with the original issue of problems with the iphone after downgrading itunes 11 to 10.7. I thought all iphone problems were solved, but today I discovered that since the downgrade the calendar on my macbook pro (running 10.6.8 snow leopard) does not sync with the calendar in my iphone 3GS. Everything else syncs without problems - contacts, notes, apps, etc. But calendar entries don't sync both ways. I've tried various things like deleting all ical related files in ~system/library/cache, and other ical related files. I also replaced the CalendarStore framework from the same frameworks directory as the other itunes frameworks. No joy. Haven't found many related threads on the forums - I guess problems AFTER downgrading itunes are not widely reported yet. Does anyone here have any idea what might help solve this issue? Steve, can you provide a link to the other threads that talk about the 'privateframeworks' stuff? Some posters there might be familiar with such errors.

I just ran into this issue, it really ***** because my car forces me to shuffle every time i turn the car off. This feature was the only way to really have "shuffle" in my car. I hope they add this back in soon.

So I was frustrated with this as well, and I figured out a way to still create a random, shuffled playlist from the main itunes library.

Once you've restored the traditional sidebar in iTunes 11, click on the plus button at the bottom and click New Smart Playlist. Once this is open, you will be given the option to create a random playlist according to certain categories/criteria.

I found that the easiest way to get a random playlist is to uncheck the Match the Following Rule icon and click the Limit to button and type in the number of random songs you want to have on your playlist.

This in essence creates a random playlist, and for people like me with over 15,000 songs, it makes it much easier to create a random playlist for my iphone.

I found away around the "no longer can make shuffle playlists" ... kind of.. Set it to "shuffle" setting.

If you are in an itunes playlist or the library click the minimize window in the top right and hit play.

Click on the "up next" list icon to the right beside the magnifying search icon.

It will show you the next 15-20 songs that are up.

If you select the top one, hold down shift and click the last it will select them all.

You can then "Copy", then go back and create a new playlist, then "paste" them in. It's a tad cumbersome and irritiating but it solved the problem for me.

Hey Steve, Yes there is a way to make a new playlist that is random shuffled! Create a new "smart" playlist and select music as random. Hope that helps 🙂
