Is it no longer possible to create shuffled playlists in iTunes 11?

I've just upgraded to iTunes 11, and I find that it appears I can no longer create a shuffled playlist. (Or have I missed something?)

In the previous versions of iTunes, as long as I had songs in a playlist sorted by number, I could click on the shuffle button against a playlist in the sidebar and all the songs in the list would be shuffled up randomly. I could then sync to my iPod and the songs in the playlist would play in the order they appeared -as shuffled- in the song view list in iTunes.

But that no longer seems to happen. There are some shuffle icons scattered about the new version, (at the top of the list view by the title and in the play panel at the top), but clicking them doesn't seem to re-order the list of songs at all; they remain in order in the list.

I'm confused...

Thanks for your reply, Khiebert.

It is so long ago now since I reverted back to 10.7 that I've forgotten how 11 works...

Can you just confirm exactly what you mean, please, and that it will definitely create shuffled lists, as opposed to just playing the songs randomly.

The main thing is, as you can probably tell from the posts above, that I want to be able to sync the pre-shuffled lists to my iPod, so that they appear on the iPod in the order they've been randomly shuffled into. If you have genuinely come up with the answer to how to do that, well done.

But it didn't seem that easy when I last used 11.

Now, this looks promising, Chris.

Right-click on the playlist, I assume? Although I'm not sure I even remember seeing a shuffled list in 11 the last time I tried it.

Anyway, I will experiment to see if it addresses all my concerns, but I'm not putting 11 back on my Mac until I'm sure. (Coz it's a real bugger to get rid of and go back to 10.7.)

I will experiment with 11 on my old Windows laptop.

It is possible to shuffle with iTunes 11,

play a song and at the top window where it says the name, artist, length and the cover art.

On the bottom corners there is a shuffle and random button. Not sure on the exact names.

Click both so that they are blue and it will randomly shuffle your music. 😝

.. Yeah you probably already knew this.

Thanks for replying Schensa.

Yes, I think I did know this. The issue is not with shuffle play within iTunes itself. I never play music on iTunes, I only play it on my iPod, wired to my hi-fi.

The issue is creating a shuffled playlist which will remain shuffled when I sync it to my iPod, so that it will play the music in the playlist according to the shuffle done in iTunes, without continually having to switch shuffle on & off on my iPod. There is a big difference there.

I have not yet got around to experimenting with Chris's suggestion.

Chris,

I've installed 11 onto my old Windows laptop, and managed to copy over a load of songs from my Mac, (which was definitely not straightforward at all!), and get them all imported into the iTunes library.

I then tried to do as you suggest, but nothing seemed to happen:-

I clicked on the 'Playlists' button at the top, which showed half a dozen lists that iTunes had created automatically.

I then clicked on one of those playlists, which happened to be called '90s Music'.

I then clicked on the 'shuffle' symbol, (two lines crossing over), and the playlist immediately began playing. I didn't want it to begin playing, but anyway...

I then right-clicked the playlist title in the left column and chose 'Copy to Play Order' but nothing seemed to happen. The list remained in alphabetical order in iTunes.

I haven't synced my iPod to this new installation of iTunes, because I think I would be wasting my time. I still haven't worked out how, having copied one playlist to 'play order', I can go on to do the same thing to the other three playlists I want to arrive on my iPod in pre-shuffled order.

Is it possible that you think I only want to sync the single playlist to my iPod I wonder?

Perhaps I didn't make it clear. What I want to sync to my iPod is my entire music collection, including all of my playlists, four of which I want to be pre-shuffled on the iPod. This was possible very easily in iTunes 10.x

I've been working with this problem also. 11 clearly does not shuffle playlists visually anymore. Why they thought that made sense is simply beyond me. There must be some geeky dumbwit diddling himself deep in the bowels of iTunes development at Apple making these decisions.

Anyway, I've given up trying to figure out 11. It's so screwed up and obtuse now, dumbed down for the dumbest of Apples' customers. It's absurd, really. I just figure Apple has their head so far up their you-know-what these days that the end of times is near, no doubt. They're doing their best to push away their most loyal customers.

Steve, remember when you could shuffle a playlist and it would stay shuffled until you purposely shuffled it again? Unlike 10, where it shuffled every time you freshly played it? They keep pulling features. Pretty soon iTunes will just be a static image on the screen.

Just copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder across to /Music/ then launch iTunes.

That is all you need to do.

You won't see anything happen.

The playlists gets sync'd in the order they are displayed in.

In iTunes, if you Shuffle a playlist and sort on any column (such as Album) the playlist will still be sorted on that column but will play shuffled. The playlist will simply jump around (1st song, then 95th song, then 231st song, then 45th song, etc.).

Click on the 1st column header with the numbers to sort them in the shuffled order.

Songs will actually be shuffled and displayed in the shuffle order. You can see this by selecting and deselecting Shuffle. Songs will be sorted when deselected and shuffled different everytime you select Shuffle.

Then Copy to play order and sync.

You will need to do this with all playlists one at a time.

That's so stupid and convoluted it's absurd. Take a simple concept of shuffling a playlist that now has become a multi-step process with results you can't view visually. Oh yeah, that makes complete sense to me. Sorting on columns has been there for ages - sorting this way is not a freakin' shuffle.

???

It's very simple.

You seem to have not read/misread what I wrote.

It's a single step process you can view visually.

iTunes ahs ALWAYS sorted on the column you select, even if Shuffle is enabled.

If you want to view as shuffled, select the first column header with the numbers. This has always been the ONLY way to view the shuffled order.

Mar 4, 2013 11:38 AM in response to Chris CA

Chris, I KNOW it's always shuffled on the first field. That's not the issue. The issue is this. Create a new playlist, add your songs. Now, how do you shuffle this playlist and see the results on the screen? How do I tell iTunes to always shuffle this play list and always repeat all, but not shuffle this or that other playlist? In v10, you'd simply highlight the playlist and toggle on or off repeat and/or shuffle for that one playlist. Setting those for one playlist did not affect any other playlist.

As it stands now, it appears the old shuffle is gone. You can make a playlist, but ability to shuffle a playlist and send it on to an iPod or whatever is gone. We now have both repeat and shuffle as part of the playback controls for the all playlists, and the individual repeat and shuffle controls for each playlist are gone. Apple has been dumbing down shuffle for several versions now, each one giving us less and less control. Now there is no control. It's stupid.

Yikes! I think I'm even more confused now than I was before...

On balance, I think I agree with you Roger.

In version 10 I could simply click the shuffle button at the bottom of the playlist column, and whatever playlist was highlighted in that column was shuffled. (Yeah, with the first column in the right pane highlighted.)

I could SEE the list shuffled, and I could even see what order the first dozen or more tracks in the playlist would play in. If nothing else, this was a reassuring state of affairs, and like you I cannot fathom why Apple would have taken it away. I could then repeat the process for each playlist I wanted to sync shuffled. (I don't want all my lists shuffled, just the ones I choose.)

Version 10 worked, but as far as I'm concerned, version 11 simply doesn't. I shan't be upgrading to 11 again in a hurry.

Thanks for your input Chris, but I cannot work out what you mean. It's probably me being dumb, but I can't get it to work how you decribe.

Is it no longer possible to create shuffled playlists in iTunes 11?
