iTunes 11 won't import new music

I had music imported back prior to 11 and it all seems fine. I was able to download new podcasts and have them show up. However, for some reason, when I try and drag music into the main music area, or on the menu bar on the left, nothing imports. All files are mp3s, locally located and have always worked in the past, so I'm unsure what's going on. Has anyone had a similar issue? I've tried restarting itunes and restarting the computer and the problem persists.

Thanks Ascending for you tip on breaking the match link to cloud. I did not sign up for the match (streaming) service so I could not figure out what the **** was happening. I just wish we did not have to "jailbreak" out of iTunes cloud now to use playlist and on computer storage.

It seems we are missing the big picture here of why iTunes 11 is such a pain at importing CDs and old music to new playlists. Apple is moving everything to the cloud. The intent is the live steaming of copywrited music as opposed to storing it on your computer. This is the reason Apple needs to match your playlist to what they have in a legal copywright database with the music companies. If old playlists and old CDs do not match their music database they are held up in the match cue somtimes randomly appearing over time on your desktop as they complete review by the big computer in the cloud.

It is not conspiracy or bad software, but Apple's misguided and badlly implemented intention to stream music mainly for their and the music companies pocket books--most of us can easiily afford the extra terrabyte of HD storage so that is no excuse. Those of us with old CDs, odd playlists or as an artist make their own music will suffer. Even then this is still the worst implementaion of a "consumer' cloud product since MobileMe.

Apple used to be the company of artists, educators, and people that think diffferently. Forget the think differently part. If it does not fit the peg of the typical, young, mainstream popculture music consumer where the money is, you will be frustrated. Welcome to Apple the new Microsoft of the music industry. Steve Jobs, may his soul rest in peace. Your company has lost its way.

Am I right here?

Thanks PH : Sadly i have to say i agree with you. It often feels that as a loyal music fan who has almost religiously sought always to pay towards the artists whose work i enjoy (both live and recorded) in the most direct manner possible it is still the case the the middle men are bleeding the industry dry. I expect more of Apple - they do still provide the best user experience out there, but the business model is becoming too insidious for my liking.

Its incredibly frustrating. But here's what I managed to get right. Create a new playlist, dont just use an existing one. Call it "new songs" or something. Drag files from desktop or folder into that playlist. If its imported from a cd use the "create mp3" option and then it appears in your song list. Really pathetic to have to do this though....

I was having a similar problem with importing mp3's that I downloaded. I turned off all the programmes linking me to Apple, such as genius, match and cloud... Itunes then allowed me to import the Mp3 files I downloaded. I haven't turned genius or anything back on to see if the files stay... but why would I want to if I have to turn them off again to add to my library

Hello there, I have found a way to import MP3 files to iTunes. iTunes won't accept MP3 getting dragged in anymore, but what you have to do is to change the extension of your music file from MP3 to M4A, than you can drag it to iTunes and everything will be fine. I explain this, and also show an easy way to download videos from YouTube with the help of a Safari Extension on my YouTube video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4yMryZBN3E I hope this helped some people.

I purchased a cd from Amazon. My iTunes 11 won't play or import the songs. I loaded on an old windows laptop, but it converted to wma. The cd loads in iTunes but an error message comes up can't find file when tries to import. Cd plays fine in car and on windows machine. Will not play in itunes either. I have restarted iTunes. Logged in and out. Read this entire thread. Anybody got any suggestions? Where are the apple iTunes guys on this?
