Open multiple playlist windows?

Thanks for the good discussion here, I was also searching for information on the lack of the iTunes store in a 2nd window. Apparently much the same issue - and mia.

I did go to the feedback page and register my little complaint over this. Ultimately this makes the application so much less useable, I will have to re-think my decision to store our library here.

Not everything is easier on a d*mn phone, Apple. I have an iMac for a reason!

John Verity, how can you access the "old mode". I saw it one somebody elses iTunes 11, but can't figure out how to switch to it.

Old mode: Option-Command-s, and voila!

I think I still like "old" better, but would be more better with multiple windows. I told Apple this, hope they listen.

Can somebody do a screen shot would love to see this option! Switched back to 10 and not doing 11 until I know I can open at least 2 playlist at the same time.

Is the icon for repeating a playlist up in the player window? One click turns the repeat to blue. Two clicks puts in a small 1 so I guess that means repeat individual track.

You can also get two playlists in a split window mode in iTunes 11 doing the following:

1) Choose "Playlist" mode along the top and select a playlist.

2) Choose "Add To" from the top menu bar to move the playlist to a menu on the right, opening the library in the main window to the left.

3) In your Library select any song that appears on any playlist and choose "Show in Playlist" and select a playlist.

This will put you back in playlist mode on the left, and retain your "Add To" playlist on the right.

Just to clarify. This DOES make the navigation work like iTunes 10, but does NOT add multiple window functionality to 11. The kludge method I posted above, which seems to be unintended by Apple, may be the only way to get two playlists in 11 for now.

I have about 500 playlists altogether if I include the mini playlists and smart playlists within my playlist folders.

Every time I use itunes I have at least three windows open, two similar styles of music, and one for the main window. Point being of course, that I always have a lot

of stuff to organise.

And if I am putting a song into another playlist, I like to be able to see that it is going into that playlist. You absolutely can't accidentally put a song into the

wrong when playlist when you have it open in another window.

If I want to use the Add to Playlist button it would take about five minutes until I get to the bottom.

No matter what, this new version involves a load of scrolling, searching and just plain awkwardness everywhere.

This is not just something that makes life easier, this is what actually makes itunes work for probably most of the power users.

You can't focus on your work if you are having to remember all of this. Open up the windows and wallah.

This single window approach should only be for the iPad or iPhone. In fact I was actually wondering if they will ever add the extra window function to the iPad.

Regards to the amount of music + all of the other types of audio available today, it really is essential to have the ability to open new windows.

I also have about 500 playlists and 120K entries in my library. Many of the 500 playlists help me sort and prepare daily playlists for podcast listening and to help me more appropriately age and delete various podcast content.

Managing my podcast content cannot effectively be done in one window. I cannot upgrade to iTunes 11 with this restriction, and if this restriction remains, I will never upgrade.

I'm back to 10.7 for now thank God, it's a shame though, the new itunes did look pretty nice, but there's no way I would ever use it without the extra windows.

Even if they added some easier ways to manage the files without needing the windows, it's still nice to be able to see how much time or megabytes you've added, especially when burning CD's.

There's a ton of great things about it, and it really is only when it gets removed that you realize it. Today when I noticed it, I was like OMG no wayyyy.

I thought I'd be waiting a month for some upgrade.

Won't version 10.7 become obsolete at some stage, for the iPhone/iPad and stuff?

If you upgrade your computer or OS, stuff goes obsolete quicker. If you continue to use the same computer and iTunes, it will last a long long time. Hard telling when Apple will update the store so that a very old iTunes wouldn't work. Probably not any time soon, but that's only my opinion.

I too have a fairly big library (>12,000 songs) with a LOT of playlists, and the lack of multiple windows in any piece of application software is just a silly design.

Thanks for this tip, billy4! It isn't separate windows and it is a roundabout way to get there, but at least it allows you to drag a song from one playlist to a particular point in another (thus eliminating the post-editing step of dragging added songs from the bottom up). Once you open one song in one of its playlists, the playlist sidebar opens up on the left side, so you can switch from one source playlist to another when adding songs to the one you are editing on the right side.

My thanks also, to John Verity for the "Old Mode" switch tip! That button bar was annoying!!

I finally got fed up with the absence of mulitple windows in iTunes 11. I also did not like having to move the mouse and click to get a popup to control remote speakers. In iTunes 10, I prefered to leave the external speaker controller window open so I have ready access to controlling external (and onboard) sound.

I looked around on the web for instructions to return to iTunes 10 and now am back to that thank goodness.

I won't be upgrading anything from Apple ever again without researching it carefully, particularly iTunes.

I REALLY hope Apple gets the message on this and restores the mulitple window features of earlier versions of iTunes, along with other features like the controlling external speakers. Without this, I have to think about whether I want to use iTunes going foward and whether to buy more Apple devices. It really bothers me a lot. (And I was really happy about Mach being incorporated into Mac OS when that happened because it brought together the best GUI with a version of Unix.) Very troubling indeed.
