List of iTunes 11 Problems That Need Fixing

iTunes 11, in my humble opinion, has been an utter disaster. A casual glance of the feedback from day 1 demonstrates this. For the sake of clarity and organizational unity, I thought it would be useful to have a running list of problems that need to be addressed, as all software are works in progress. Here we go. Please add your own.

1. No iTunes DJ. No reason to get rid of this.

2. No Artwork Cover Flow

3. Problems playing video files.

4. No Duplicate listing.

I agree that the Podcasts view has been rendered nearly useless:

- I cannot re-order the podcasts listed by oldest first or change back to newest first (no column head to click on to reverse the order).

- There no columns listing episode #, length of episode, comments column, etc.

- There is no scroll bar on the right in Windows 7 to shift up and down the list. One needs to use the scroll wheel, which is annoying if you have a long list.

If I click on View Options, a message box comes up that says "No Options available". Well that pretty well says it all: YOU HAVE NO CHOICE, SO LIVE WITH IT.

Apple has forced a fixed Podcast view on us with no ability to change the view. Why in the world destroy something good? Just to dumb it down for new/ignorant computer users?

I found:

- No backward/forward navigation with the mouse side buttons anymore

- Ctrl+left arrow/right arrow skips to next/previous song when playing music, even while your are writing a review and use that key combination to skip word in text

- When rightclicking an album title and setting rating to 5 stars it is not submitted

There are also improvements:

+ Cloud item can be hidden

+ Preview of songs keep playing even when leaving the page the preview was started from

+ The visualizer seems to look even better

+ All unnecessary things like Ping, Genius etc. have either gone for good or are now hidden in the menu

- inability to select multiple albums by an artist to edit a field, such as genre. Der.

- play arrow beside tracks isn't a play/puse button at all, rather, it is a start over button of sorts.

- WAY too many redundacies with track control buttons, and they are a scattered, infuriorating mess all over the screen. I really hate this one.

What's a column browser?

About the other things: are you sure?

  • When right-clicking an album cover you can still select "Delete"
  • Whilst holding the Shift key, you can still select multiple albums by cover or name and edit them at once. It even works by dragging an invisible rectangle with the mouse around the album covers
  • The "play arrow" is no play arrow it's just an angle bracket - songs are played with double-click or by first selecting a track and then use the Play button next to the album name - the same as it was in 10.7, since there never was a Play button next to a track name.

- The column browser is in the view menu. It's called "column browser". In 10 you could place Artists>Albums on the left of the other columns ala finder's column list, allowing you to scan a much longer list (column) of artists quickly (as opposed to scrolling), then view their entire album list (without having to scroll), then select the track. This layout read (rather naturally) left to right, and displayed all of the information in one vertical column, save for longer artist lists.

- when right-clicking an album (in album view), I can still click delete, but it does nothing.

- while holding the shift key (or the command key) in artist view, I cannot select multiple albums.

- the "angle bracket" looks suspiciously like a right-pointing black triangle to me, identical to the play arrow.

@ Infiniter,

I'm talking about the arrow to the right of the album in artist list. It plays from the first track of the album. That makes 4 ways to play if you include right-click>play. Seems a bit scattered/redundant to me. If you want to play an album, why not double click it's title or the miniature album art? You have to do it this way for a track anyways.

The bug that's been annoying me most is when giving a start rating beside a track, it will randomly apply the same amount of stars to another random track in another album on the same page. About half the time I have to rate the track I want to rate while keeping an eye on the rest of the screen, then unrate the random affected track.

- Randomly changing the genres of the tracks where I've already hand-picked the genres of my choice. This is a big deal for me. I spent time getting things the way I want them, I don't want to fight i-tunes to get the genres the way I want them as it changes a few at a time and I have to hand change them back and then they change them again. It's not as bad as if they were to change the names of songs, artists, and albums, but it's close. I'm using i-tunes to access my already paid for music, I don't want i-tunes to change my files without my consent. If this is supposed to be a "feature", there should be an option to turn it off.

- I don't mind them putting the album artwork for the currently playing song at the top rather than the bottom left, but they should make it bigger. It's not the new placement that's a problem for me, it's that it's way too small.

Otherwise, itunes 11 is great. But that first issue I mentioned could in the long run cause me to seek a new music manager if I can't work around it somehow.

Dec 7, 2012 12:35 AM in response to Manny888

I'd say the biggest problem is the search feature. The older version of itunes allowed users to search their device the new one only allows users to search the itunes store or their library. This is a big deal when you have 80 gb of music (THOUSANDS OF SONGS) Apple needs to realize people don't get their music soley from the itunes store and just because it is on their computer, doesn't mean it will be in their itunes library. All in all, trainwreck of an update.

@ infiniter

The issues that I am having is nothing to do with the fonts installed on my PC.

It is extremely unlikely that Apple would allow it's software to rely on the fonts that may or may not be installed on it's customers computers. I would be happy if the problem was just a case of a font not appearing. Most of the controls and buttons that are on itunes 11 are missing in my case.

Apple are currently looking into it having had a snapshot of my pc and a copy of a diagnostic test.

I'll add my problems to the ever-growing list:

1) Composer tab missing -- this is DEVASTATING for someone who has a large library of classical music.

2) Artist tab seems to display by Album Artist (useless, IMHO)

3) Column Browser option is constantly greyed out

4) When I edit the song info manually, iTunes overwrites my changes when I play the song. (This has been a problem for me with all iTunes versions that I recall -- thought it would have been fixed by now)

Glad to hear that Apple follows these discussions. Hopefully, they can direct me to the solutions for these problems.

"1. When you download a song it does not go into your library. It goes into your Purchases and then has to be downloaded from the Cloud.."

Ugh...Really? I haven't purchased anything since the upgrade, but I absolutely hate this idea. Too many "clouds" out there -- I can't keep track of which songs are on my Amazon cloud, and which are on my iTunes cloud, etc. If I buy the file, just give me the ******* file already, without making me take extra steps to get it to my computer. (Especially since there are still occasions when I, gasp, am not online)
