Quartz Extreme

I was reading about graphic cards and it talks about Quartz Extreme. It says this works in Panther. It allows the CPU to do its job, crunching data and turns imaging duties over to the graphic card. The question is does this happen automatically, or do you have to turn something on, or put some software on to activate it?

John,

I have actually used the hack described in the link.
I am running a Radeon 7000 on my B&W, and the hack allows you to activate QE on PCI cards.
I must say that I am not experiencing any problems on the B&W, but again note that the bus speed on the additional PCI slots of the beige is only 33mhz,
while the dedicated PCI slot on the B&W runs at 66mhz.
Because I was not happy, and I really wanted to "fry" my chip, I downloaded ATIccelerator (brrrrrr!!!!!) which allows you to tweak the speed of the chip and the DDR memory on the card.
Honestly, the trouble is more than the gain. There are no noticeable advantages in terms of speed, and the risk of overheating the card is too high.

As far as QE goes......well, the screensavers and the visualizer modules in iTunes are great, but that's about it.
I tried Myth with and without QE and there seem to be no differences in the response and definition of the 7000.
Maybe with the 9200 it's a different can of beans........

cheers

I tried the PCI Extreme to enable Quartz Extreme back when I had a Radeon Mac Edition in my G3 Desktop. It enabled the cube transistion when you switch users, and dissolve crossfade of a desktop picture that is set to change on a regular interval. I didn't really notice any other video speed improvements. But for me DVD playback was totally messed up, so I uninstalled it. Not sure I really need or want to try it again with my 9200 I just put in.
