Multiple Windows in iTunes 11?

How can I open multiple iTunes windows using iTunes 11? Before updating, I was able to have multiple playlist windows open. So far, iT11 looks nice, but functions poorly.

In short, you cannot. This is yet another useful legacy function / feature that has been axed in V11. Why they would do this I have no idea. Multiple windows is very useful, but for some reason they decided to dumb down V11 to the point of uselessness.

Are we, as a species, really getting that stupid we cannot figure this stuff out for ourselves?

Where did I say that you had to be an antagonistic *******?? I simply said to get to the point. No need to pussyfoot around the issue. Do you honestly think Apple cares about you as an individual? No.

Be clear, concise, polite but also get to the point. Don't pick a fight with me with your little snide remarks, pick the fight with Apple!

Cheers and and have a pleasant weekend. 🙂

New guy here. Itunes user since 2006. Always liked the product until the v11 upgrade.

I've been struggling with trying to learn to like and use 11 the way I want to use it. In the end, the thing that kept biting me was the inability to open new windows for playlists.

I have my music in a couple of different places (folders on different drives) based on criteria like : "old radio shows", "HD Tracks", "Concert Trading" , "Amazon", "Apple", "CD rips", "Tape Conversion", "Artist Direct", "my music lessons" etc..... with only about 5% of my music actually coming from Apple itself. So my library isn't in one place. And also my file and id3 naming is a mess....

When I make a playlist, I'm in the mood for a certain type of music, or a blend.... and I have a lot of that figured out, in terms of what songs work together (for me). The easy thing is for me to copy between playlists, and then fill in the gaps it hstuff from the file system.

Perhaps I am an outlyer in the way I use it... not common. (But then again, maybe not becasue there are a lot of people here complaining abut similar problems wit hthe lack of new windows).

Sure, you can copy a block of songs to a new playlist ising the context menu... but then you have to go into the new playlist.... scroll to the bottom, and then move the songs into place. It sounds trivial, but in my case I'm sometimes making a playlist to last over a 3 day weekend..... constant stream (like a replacement for radio basically).... and with maybe 600 items in a playlist, the iTunes 11 way is cumbersome to say the least. ....

I tried... I really did. And today I bit the bullet and fell back to version 10.7 on Windows 7... The only thing that i found that I lost was my playcounts, and any new playlists that I made sice the upgrade in December.... for the latter (the playlists) I knew it would happen, and exported the ones I cared about before downgrade.

I'm happy again. Old 10.7 is new again.

Simple steps for windows vista/7/8 (and I guess XP guys too)

1. "Export playlist" any playlists that you care about, that you've created since the V11 upgrade. Put them somewhere away from your itunes library. These will be .m3u playlist files.

2. Download version 10.7 (or 10.07 or whatever it is) from oldversions.com

3. Uninstall Itunes 11 from control panel. Just do it.... you know you want to. 🙂

4. Make sure to uninstall the other apple products too, like Apple Updater, Apple Mobile Device support... there's at least 3 of them near each other in the program list.

5. within your itunes folder ( C:\Users\Timmy\Music\iTunes ) you will see a file called "iTunes Library.itl" . Rename it to something like "v11.stinks.iTunes Library.itl".

6. from the Previous C:\Users\Timmy\Music\iTunes\iTunes Libraries\Previous iTunes Libraries folder copy the newest version of iTunes Library__some_date__.itl to C:\Users\Timmy\Music\iTunes\iTunes Libraries.

6b. rename that file to iTunes Library.itl

** this is your song database ** and it will have all your last played, song counts, and playlists as of the moment you upgraded to the stinking heap that is version 11.

7. Run the installer for version 10.7. Sit back and let it do it's thing. It sould work fine.

7 - IMPORTANT" - when the installer starts, make sure to unclick the box next to automatic updates. Make sure you get this right, ro else iTunes will automagically update to 11 at some point. That would be BAD.

8. Itunes 10 will start... and churn for a while wile it ready your library. Don't worry, let it go... it's all good. You will note that it happens much faster than wehen you went to version 11.

9. Once you've verified that you can play a song in the software, go ahead and import any playlists you saved off in step (1).

10. Say to your self "Kiss off apple, I can work my own way again".

Have fun.

PS: Dev team, and product design.... in case you haven't figured it out yet, Version 11 is full of kcus.

AMF.

PS: Thank god I chose an Android phone last year, and don't actually need a new Itunes to keep my phone current...... I don't have an iPad either.... my slate will be a Samsung or something.....

I'm VERY disappointed that Apple removed the feature to have SEVERAL WINDOWS OPPEND, this helped me very muctch in my purchases in order of not to geting duplicates, now I will have to buy my music in Amazon where I can see in one wiindow (Safari) and the other window (iTunes) if I have the albun or song. Sorry Apple my business is going elshere.

I've just updated my iPad and iPhone to IOS 7, and as soon as I plugged them in to sync it says that iTunes 11.1 is required. What now? Downgrade to IOS6 again or what? Is there any possible way to use IOS 7 with an older version of iTunes?

It just doesn't make any sense AT ALL why they got rid of this functionality on purpose. They actually meant to do it... If this is not some kind of a marketing tactic where they are going to bring out some convenient alternative or just cause more people to "have to" buy Macs in general, then Apple must be losing it.

The choice is have a load of great new features in the iPad and iPhone, have a useless itunes (iPhone and iPad organizer)

or

Have a fully functioning iTunes, and a load of missing features in the iPad and iPhone.

You cannot downgrade iOS. iOS 7 requires iTunes 11.1 or later. Turning on the menus and sidebars returns much of the iTunes 10.x look & feel. While you cannot open two playlists side by side to compare their contents you can drag selections from one list to another, and you can use smart playlists to find, for example, all tracks in playlist A, that aren't in playlist B.

I'll update so in the morning I suppose. I guess it ain't that big of a deal, I'm just so used to using multiple windows for so long I couldn't imagine changing. That is one thing I that was annoying me, not being able to compare playlists to find an error, but I've gotten well into making smart playlists now, which is actually faster. I know there are other advantages to multiple windows, but it ain't the end of the world.

Oh I remember now why I needed the windows so badly before, it was becuase every time I got a load of new songs I used to have a few windows for all of the different styles, but as I mentioned now that I use smart playlists so much, I don't drag and drop anymore, I just rename the file and it goes where I want it to automatically, so yeah I won't be missing much I'd say.

Cheers.

What I think is amazing is that Apple has been completely SILENT about this for nearly a year. My guess is that it's ok with them if making playlists is now hard -- because then you'll use the new iTunes radio feature and potentially buy more music.

The best solution I've found is the suggestion to run multiple apps side-by-side, or to organize your music into playlist folders (so that finding a playlist is a bit easier), then dragging music from your Music Library into the playlist on the left-hand-side.

Organizing the resultant playlist is a pain. But two steps is better than the giant task switch and losing your place in your music library.

The control-click and 'add to playlist ...' feature is justa bout useless if you have more than 3 playlists -- and besides, it's convenienly on the bottom of the context menu so you have to scroll while holding the control-key and pressing on the touch pad on your laptop. Nice.
