FCPX Running out of Memory...pls help

I don't understand. I have a Mac Pro 8 Core 2,4 Ghz with 32 Gb of memory running Mountain Lion en Final Cut Pro X. I am working with one hour of videofootage from my Canon XF300 (XMF 1080 50mb/s converted to (FCPX Optimal Performance) ProRess.

I am working with the project for about an hour and then the memory-alert kicked in. I have been using a memory cleaner (which I feel I should not have too) and I had only 80Mb's left. How is this possible and doesn't OSX manage its memory itself?

What can I do?

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

It seems to me that, at least on OS 10.6 (which I'm still running), this RAM behavior has changed over the past several versions. Earlier versions (< 10.0.04?) I recall were very prone to not releasing RAM and requiring routine re-lauches to be able to work with any sort of efficiency.

Things definitely improved with subsequent updates – even though the old behavior would occasionally reappear..

Then I went through a stretch where I experienced similar problems to the ones you describe. Things would come to a crawl and re-launching FCP didn't do anything to free up the RAM; only rebooting would do it. After trying a number of , I've found that repairing permissions got things working properly again. I could then typically work throughout the day without that problem.( As a matter of course, I now repair permissions 2 or 3 times a week.)

Good luck.
