I too am frustrated at the loss of mutiple-window functionality. I found it particularly useful when accessing the itunes store. I will certainly go there less frequently.

I cannot believe someone at Apple suggested 'Let's take away this key functionality from customers', and then some higher-up said 'Yes...wonderful idea...go do it.'

Were Steve still with us, bless his soul, I am sure this would never have happened. I am so sorry Apple has lost it's vision.

Now...where are those downgrade instructions!

Completely on board with one and all who miss this feature! Opening playlists in separate windows can prove indispensable when DJ'ing an evening, particularly with someone else's playlist. At-a-glance overview of multiple playlists enables stonerproof navigation.

My hunch is that whoever decided to nix this feature is part of the same team that developed, and prematurely launched, the quite poor Apple Maps. 😉

Is it just me, or does it seem like there's someone inside Apple working to sabotage the company these days?

Please Apple... Pretty please with cherries on top... Bring back the ability to open playlists in separate windows.

I have over 300 playlists, over 20,000 songs, I am often working on 5 - 10 playlists at a time. When the update came out, I made sure that I had saved my previous iTunes exe file, library file (it's an .itl extension) and Music Library file (it's an .xml extension). Hated the new version, went back to 10.7.0.21. Honestly, my frustration became great enough that I tried using Pandora. So far I have had enormous success. I create my playlists there, use songs as seeds that I would have used on iTunes, and have been happy.

Here's the rub: Apple ****** me off enough with this latest idiocy that this last Christmas I said the writing is on the wall, the company is no longer what it used to be, and after being a loyal iPhone user I actually switched me and my son to the Galaxy 3S.

AND I LOVE IT! So Apple is costing itself in more ways than one with this latest screw-up. I mean, come on, didn't they run this by anyone who uses iTunes as a DJ system?

Never underestimate the power of large groups of stupid people. I bet Apple is peopling its ranks with a bunch of Yes-men, so no-one is telling the upper management that the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes.

Dear Apple,

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating such incredibly intuitive and simple ways to work and play. iTunes has been the most useful tool ever for managing a collection of music, OSX is the best and most powerful system I could imagine and I would be lost without them.

That being said, it seems that every update since October 5, 2011 has managed to decrease the incredibly intuitive ways we use these tools. Features that are heavily relied upon for effiencency and workflow are consistantly taken away or hidden with every update. While new features are appreciated and embraced there is no reason to remove features from your system and programs.

The consistant updating to make the system and programs less intuitive has me greatly concerned for the ongoing future of Apple which, due to your incredible accomplishments and forward thinking, I rely heavily upon for my occupation, as well as for Apple stock which I have quite a bit of my savings invested in based on my past confidence in your ability to continue to create more and more intuitive products. At the moment there are no great alternatives to Apple products but you are steadily creating a market for them to be created and take over.

I thought someone at Apple was supposed to be reading/skimming these posts in order to improve their product? Listen up Apple, you need to put back the ability to open up playlists et.al. in a separate window. People who think iTunes 11 is "easier" simply are those who don't use it as heavily as others, and judging from some of these posts they seem like simpletons who never used the multiple windows ability anyways.

Hey Guys,

Got to agree with the OP and others.

I have a pretty large library and find this a real step backwards. iTunes used to be a really flexible tool which could easily play files of different formats, sample rates, etc.

Over the years it has, I suppose to sime degree out of necessity, become more and more locked-down with fetures disappearing or being morphed into 'new' features (party shuffle>itunes DJ>up next).

I do find this increasingly proscriptive approach really annoying and worringly similar to some of the thing that swore me off Redmond many years ago.

-and I cannot see any advantage to removing the ability to open a playlist in a separate window -unless it has something to do with tablet or smaller-screen devices.

However, as I'm sure some of will also have done, there is, sort-of, a work-around.(and similar to what imp68 suggested)

See here:

Helps a bit, but crushingly frustrating that it wont work from the sidebar and still not as simple as it was before.

Grrrrrrr...

why can't i open a playlist in a new window with itunes 11?
