Hi,
I'm getting a 2TB external drive. Which file system is recommended for an external drive that one wants to use on both Mindows and OS X 10.8?
I would much appreciate if you would state your reasons on your recommendation as well.

No answer for "large scale, long term". Just use it for small thumb drive. But it has not failed on me yet.
Thanks but as I will put a lot of data on it, it's stability is vital, as there are more used solutions as NTFS drivers for OS X.

I would not say "best", as I do not like giving advice that goes bad.
I would use ExFAT myself even for large partitions, based on the continued recommendation fro senior contributors. But if you feel better using NTFS-3G or other NTFS-compatibility software, then you should pay the money.
Just format it as NTFS on a Windows machine and spend the $20 for Paragon's NTFS for Mac - that's what I use.

I use ExFat without issue and have been doing so across multiple drives for a long time. As already said, format the drive(s) using Windows.
