Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
My latest gen Apple TV will not update it's software. It seems to download the update just fine and then goes to the "preparing update" screen. The progress bar on that screen gets about 90% of the way then I get an "update not successful" message. I have already restarted the device twice as well as unplugged it from the power supply twice and reconnected it before trying the update again. No effect.

I picked up a used Apple TV 3 and connected via Ethernet to do the latest update. Came up "update not successfull" after many attempts. Then disconnected Ethernet and connected via wifi and update worked that time. Watching movies and everything else works through Ethernet connection except updates. Strange...

I was having a world of pain updating my Apple TV 2 from 5.0.2 to 6.2.1 so that I could run netflix.
This helped enormously - except for two small details:
1. I downloaded the iOS 6.2.1 firmware from here:
http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS8/031-07202.20140917.tF6Fs/AppleTV2,1_6.2.1_11D258_ Restore.ipsw
2. I got a microUSB cable that supports data transfer (a lot are only battery chargers) and did the following (sequence is important):
a: launched iTunes
b: plugged in MicroUSB from Apple TV 2 to MacBook
c: powered up Apple TV
d: when it appeared in iTunes, help down the option key and clicked on "Restore"
e: In the resulting dialog, I selected the iOS 6.2.1 restore image that I downloaded in step 1.
3. Left all alone, watching iTunes status in nervous anticipation.
4. After iTunes reported success, unplugged Apple TV, moved it to real TV, powered up, setup everything again - and NetFlix now works on my 4 year old beast. And it works well.
