WiFi issue with Apple, Gmail and Facebook: iPhone 4S and iPad2 (WiFi)

Since Monday 12/10/1012 my four Apple devices (2 x iPhone 4S, 2 x iPad 2 WiFi, all running iOS6) have been displaying the following issues when connected to my home WiFI network:

  1. Connection is good.
  2. Can surf most web pages.
  3. Facebook app does not update; times out.
  4. Gmail app does not update; times out.
  5. Email from an ISP in New Zealand times out.
  6. iStore app does not update; times out.
  7. The site http://http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html does not respond when connected to the WiFi.
  8. Gmail, Facebook and Apple web pages time out when I attempt to access them.
  9. Other siates are fine.
  10. Email from my company's outlook exchange server unaffected.

My ISP is Bell Canada, who is not interested in the problem.

This feels similar to the initial iOS6 problem, but the problem is not a complete lack of connectivity. The problem appears to have started on Sunday night / Monday and to have progressively affected more devices and apps (on Tuesday night one iPhone Facebook app fwas fine, the other one broken).

I have:

  1. Hard-rebooted the internet router.
  2. Hard-rebooted the devices.
  3. Messed around with switching airplane modes on and off, switching WiFi on and off, resetting network settings, forgetting networks. Nothing helps.

Any other ideas?

I was able to resolve the App Store issue on my iPhone 4s before speaking to Bell 2 days ago, but my iPad still won't open the App Store or Netflix (I'm not a Facebook user). My iPad also has a Safari issue. And my MacBook Pro is having Safari issues with some sites - specifically Accuweather - but no issue with the same sites when using FireFox. These problems all began on Dec 11 when Bell admits their technical issue began. I don't believe that Bell has resolved their issue yet.

My issues appear to be solved, but only after having to hard reboot ( pull the power) the modem. And then having to go through the whole registration process again.

I was alerted to the fact that things may be changing by the fact that I was getting o

Push notifications from Facebook (although I had configured the app not to do that). I could still not access FB, Gmail or Apple (or Bell, even from a Windows laptop - go figure :)).

When I chatted with Bell agent online they were still blissfully unaware and refused to hear anything about Apple.

Odd company - obviously believes that they have enough customers that blowing off a few individuals ( how many I wonder?) and having shambolic internal communications is irrelevant.

Anyone else still experiencing this issue? I'm using an iPhone 5 (Telus Mobility) with Bell Internet. Surfing with Safari on the iPhone works fine, but apps that require internet don't load (Facebook, Gmail, Netflix, etc.) and behave as though there is no internet connection. I also can't perform iCloud backups over wifi.

By turning off WiFi and allowing the phone to fall back to 3G, all the apps start working again.

I have reset the modem to factory settings (2Wire 2701HG-G), experimented with different wireless security settings (WEP, WPA), turned off the modem's firewall, reset network settings on the iPhone, and spoken to both Bell and AppleCare. Bell didn't have a clue, and Apple couldn't find a solution either. No amount of rebooting the phone and modem seems to change anything.

The other devices on the same wifi network, including un iPhone 4 running iOS 5, have no issues at all.

I can't figure out if this is a router issue, a Bell backend issue, or an iOS 6 issue, since it seems limited to the iPhone 5. I am also just outside Montreal.

Salsa girl,

I have 2Wire 2701HG-G. Your issue seems like a wifi range issue. As ThaWoodpecka said, my issue is that many Apps won't work AT ALL, regardless of wifi signal strength.

I've been able to confirm that a second iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S with iOS 6 on my wifi network also can't use most apps (Facebook, etc.), but can browse the web and use a few apps like Words with Friends. So there's no way that it's an issue with my particular phone.

Apple says to contact my ISP, and Bell Internet tells me to contact Apple.

ThaWoodpecka,

Did Bell explain what was wrong to start with, or what had to be changed, or did your problem just dissapear? I'm not sure what resources the Bell Internet support agents have access to (like a database of known issues), but they wouldn't acknowledge the problem.

It is very strange that I haven't found any other discussions of similar issues online... There are lots of people with Bell Internet and iOS 6 devices!!
