Can not send mail

For the last 3 days now I have been having horrific trouble with mail. I have 3 email accounts (one hotmail and two live) which all use the same POP and SMTP settings. I can receive mail on all 3 accounts but can not send from any of them. Each time I try sending a test mail to myself from any of these accounts I receive the error message as follows;

When I carry out a connection doctor check this is the result;

I have spent the last 3 days hunting every forum trying every solution plausible, including but not limited to changing various SMTP settings, deactivating/activvating SSL, deleting and re-adding accounts, even off my own accord varifying disk and repairing.

I know that this is not human error, I also know my settings are fine as I have cross referenced with my MacBook running the same 3 email accounts which work fine, same goes for my iPhone (should point out the issue is on my Mac Pro). The problem started for no apparent reason.

I should also mention I upgraded to Mountain Lion about a week ago, but it was working fine after the upgrade and all updates. At this present moment in time I am running OSX 10.8.2 with Mail 6.2.

I have however just noticed another issue when trying to update software via the app store, whereby it throws up an error 1004 saying please try again later. Doubtful these issues are related but it's becoming beyond a joke. I am a freelancer and require email to send files from my Mac Pro, I am now having to resort to transfering files to my MacBook to email which is just tedious.

Please can anyone give me a sure fire solution to this?

Hi MarkD89

I am in the UK and eventually found the problem was due to my BT Home Hub Router. Not sure where you live, but of you are in the UK, this might work for you.

I found this fix below on https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4604180?start=15&tstart=0

It worked for me. If you can't link to the URL, here is the body of the text

There's an issue related to the BT homehub that is providing a hostname that is "syntactically incorrect" for several smtp server.

Here's how you can fix it.

Using your internet browser, go to the address "192.168.1.254

- Follow instructions to reset your password if asked.

- Then go to "Settings", then "Advanced Settings" and "home network"

You will see there all the devices that are connected or that has been connected before. It's gonna be easyer if yout computer is the only one connected.

Your computer should have a name like "unknown-xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ...

Click on this name, chose another name without any special characters, like "macbook" for exemple.

And then click on "apply"

- restart your computer.

That should fix the issue.

Credit goes to vincentfromcork for providing me with the solution.

If it works for you, spread the word :-)
