itunes is rubbish

You cannot "sort" on the exclamation mark. Probably because it never dawned on the iTunes team that anyone would move their files, thus causing the database (iTunes) to lose track of the songs. Why would you do that?

It sounds as though the iPad problem is because you are trying to use two different Libraries. iPads and iPods are designed to Sync with one Library. Attenmpting to Sync with a second Library will remove the content of the first Library. Without crossing the line with speculation, I think it's safe to say that iTunes was designed that way to satisfy the music industry, who were worried about music piracy.

As for your belief that iTunes is very limiting, remarkably, there have been a couple of posts in the last few days from people complaining that iTunes does too much.

You couldn't make it up!

Why don't you use a memory stick to copy the music from the other computers to the one you intend to use your iPad with; import the music into that iTunes Library?

Thanks Fiend. I will have to do as you say, Move the files to one iTunes library and do it all from there. I guess I expect a bit much from using so many different machines.

I want to sort the ! column to make it easier to delete the missing files.

Here is one approach...

Lost & Found playlists

Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You can delete them all with a Ctrl-A to select them and Shift-Delete to remove them.

You can then delete the Lost & Found playlists.

Or you could try the script iTunes remove not found.

In future don't move files around by hand.

I also have a tool that could potentially find the missing files if you want the broken links fixed after all.
