Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Are they any technical instructions for setting up Home Sharing?

The on-screen instructions for setting up Home-Sharing do not work, primarily because they are too simplistic, and don't give users any as to how it should work!

Does anyone know of any technical instructions around to help users solve the problem?

I have seen many-many questions on this forum relating to users inability to set up home sharing, so there is a definite need for some additional help.

I don't think there are.

In essence Home Sharing justs announces a computer or device on teh LAN using a specific iTunes login, and allows the devices to interact.

To the end user, apart from enabling/disabling their devices with the approrpiate ID there is not much else they can do.

Most issues come down to networking and firewalls/security software or other vagaries preventing each device seeing another on the network. I have felt that portable devices sometimes forget to renew their Home Sharing LAN addresses when they rejoin networks.

Home sharing is simply an on/off toggle option in iTunes, and the settings option on iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, Apple TV gen 2/3).

With home sharing turned on on all appropriate devices they SHOULD all see each other on the network and be able to interact. I think they need to be associated with the same iTunes account, however, for it to work.

Hope this helps.

Sadly Will, 'simple' is not a word I'd associate with Home Sharing!

Although new to aTV, i am not stupid, and have a computing degree, but this defeats me. i just don't know what I should be investigating to solve the problem.

I can get VNC to work, so I can to see my PC or RaspberryPi from my iPad, but I cannot get aTV to see either my PC or my iPad!

Sadly Joe, these instructions are rubbish!

e.g. It states If the Home Sharing icon is not visible, choose Advanced > Turn On Home Sharing from the menu bar. (You can disable or enable Home Sharing for your computer using the Advanced menu.)

Where the **** is the 'Advanced' menu it mentions? (I'd give it 0/10 for clarity)

In iTunes.

Home Sharing is similar to Apple's Bonjour service - a kind of a zero configuration network service for the LAN. Apple provide few technical details to help us though port blocking could prevent them working if you use any software/hardware port blocking on the LAN.

Still not quite sure if you have issues with Home Sharing between iTunes and AppleTV or iOS device and AppleTV, or more likely both.

Not sure if you have restarted your router but that does sometimes work (as does restarting AppleTV, itunes etc occasionally).

The problem is that there are no real diagnostic options available for us to use - it works or doesn't work properly, and the tendency is to blame Apple when it may be the router or other networking configuration options.
