Are they any technical instructions for setting up Home Sharing?

The on-screen instructions for setting up Home-Sharing do not work, primarily because they are too simplistic, and don't give users any as to how it should work!

Does anyone know of any technical instructions around to help users solve the problem?

I have seen many-many questions on this forum relating to users inability to set up home sharing, so there is a definite need for some additional help.

Looks as though Apple has not updated documentation for iTunes 11 as Winston suggests.

A long time ago there was a bug in iTunes - when you enabled Home Sharing and clicked OK it actually turned it off again! So instead I used to click on Movies/TV show etc to get out of the Home Sharing menu

having enabled it rather than exiting via the ok type confirmation dialogue.

I quite agree, it's also one of the downsides of completely revamping things as they have for iTunes 11.

Perhaps best to send feedback when these things are out of date:

AC,

Thanks for list of Port Numbers, but sadly none of them are blocked, but I have still specifically allowed them anyway. I have iTunes11 running on a Windows PC, and followed your advice about how to turn on Home Sharing but neither action got Home Sharing to work.

Out of interest, although I can get mirroring and Remote Control to work from my iPad2, aTV still doesn't show music content or Photo's from IPad! Is there something I need to do within the iPad2 to enable Home Sharing or is it just supposed to work, cos it don't!!

I'm rapidly losing what little hair I have left.

Just for clarity - what are you trying to use Home Sharing for on the PC?

Compatible content stored in iTunes would be accessed under the AppleTVs Computers icon which will list any detected Home Shared itunes libraries on the LAN - if none it will moan that you need to set up Home Sharing.

As Remote app and mirroring work from iPad it would suggest that the primary issue is communication with the PC.

Again for clarity, iOS devices either do lossy compressed screen sharing (Airplay mirroring) if new enough OR can send media files directly to the AppleTV to decode/playback (stored music and video on teh iOS device - a stream is pushed to AppleTV) - photos may work slightly differently, but do you see an Airplay icon in the photo app? AppleTV cannot 'pull' material from an iOS device using it as a source, things are 'pushed' from teh iOS device.

With computers, Home Sharing iTunes allows you to use the computer as a media source and pull audio/video streams from iTunes. To confuse matters items can also be pushed to AppleTV from itunes using the destination 'speaker' icon which now resembles Airplay. Windows PCs and most Macs over 12-18 months old cannot do Airplay mirroring of screen content, but there's a 3rd party app called AirParrot which can do this though performance may not be optimal in some cases.

AC,

That little explanation solved my Home Sharing problem!! Many Thanks.

What no-one had seemed fit to mention when discussing setting up Home Sharing on iTunes, is that after turning it on, one had to select AirPlay on iTunes to make content visible to aTV.

Why oh why couldn't Apple see fit to include this in their aTV instructions - aaargh.

Well, glad it's sorted for now at least.

So are you using Computers icon on AppleTV to select material or pushing from iTunes after initiating playback there?

You should not need to select AppleTV as an Airplay device in itunes for Home Sharing to work, though doing so may have caused the AppletV to be detected I suppose.

Well the idea was to use my new aTV to pull content from my PC. But as I don't have an HDMI connector on my TV, just a DVI input, so no sound gets through to TV anyway, so this is just an academice exercise until I get a new TV.

It would have been nice if Apple had provided a separate Audio output, but that would be asking too much! Looks versus functionality again.

AppleTV1 had component video and analogue audio out as well.

Legacy stuff to many perhaps, but still useful in many circumstances. The loss of analogue audio out in particular is a shame, as well as loss of internal storage, but i think the aim was to cut overall costs/power and form factor.

I haven't look back through this post but if it helps, before I bought an amplifier with an optical input I used an optical to analogue converter (http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=digital+to+analo g+audio+converter&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=17119608466092831363&sa= X&ei=y5XdUIeHDI2q0AXs1ID4AQ&ved=0CGYQ8wIwAA#ps-sellers) and this worked fine with my old Yamaha amp.

So your ATV sound problem is easily solved. The adaptor I used cost about £35.

I am a late convert to ATV and use it mostly for music but when I am abroad I use it to Airplay catchup TV via my ipad and a vpn. I think they're brilliant.
