Issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011

I am wondering if anybody else is having issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011?

It seems that when the Intel graphics card is in use all is ok, but when the AMD switches on the fans kick on and the MBP starts to get really hot, then the video fails with various issues ranging from a split screen, pinstripe lines, black screen, etc. All I can do is power off. Then, even after cooling down, it might take overnight before I can power it back on and have a working computer. Resetting SMC, PRAM, NVRAM, etc. is of no help. I can't get it to go into safe mode at all. I can't even get it to boot off the OSx install disk until I wait 8 - 12 hours. I swapped hard drives and reseatted the RAM, but my diagnostics say all is ok. I also took it to the genius bar and their diagnostics show no issues as well, but the tech says it is a failing video card and Apple will replace it for $310.

A few questions I have are:

Is this another NVidia-type of issue that will eventually result in a lawsuit?

I thought the video card was built into the logic board, if so, does that mean the logic board will be replaced?

Is $310 a fair charge for this repair?

Should I have purchased AppleCare when I had a chance? I thought spending $2000+ for a MBP would be better than the sub $500 laptops at malwart and other places.

I am having the same exact issue. My discreet 6750 is the culprit. The computer works ok with the integrated HD3000. I am going to the apple store today to see about getting it fixed. I have AppleCare so it shouldn't cost me anything. These things happen from time to time.

I have the same problem in my MAC BOOK PRO 15", EARLY 2011 just after upgrading to MAVERICKS. The stops just after checking the disk and switching to the graphic mode (gray screen), some time I get a vertical strips screen when running "normally".

when booting the fan starts and the computer gets hotter. I followed instruction to boot the mac book with the lid closed and inside may backpack, when it get hot I can reboot and start using it.

Same here after a Mavericks install last week on my early 2011 Macbook Pro with AMD Radeon 6490M discrete graphics card. I get blue vertical stripes, distorted pictures (even over two displays), black screens and the system freezes. After waiting a little bit, the sstem might reboot. The error happens everywhere, in safe mode, in recovery. Especially when running graphics intensive software like iPhoto, FaceTime etc.

This seems to be similar to the iMac problem where Apple launched an official exchange program.

It seems to be a general design fault of the especially Late 2011 MBP with AMD Graphics. I had the problem 3 times now ( since buying it in late 2011), got the mainboard(logic board) replaced 3 times ( thats the component which is like 90% of your MBP wher everything is solderd on).

I use very graphic heavy applications, mainly Video Editing, every day for longer period of times. So the computer really heats up. I always wondered why the computer got so hot, but I figured at the beginning it maybe is just working "on the edge". The very powerful quadcore 7i generates a lot of heat.

Based on several tests with cooling and having been there now 3 times, I figured that some components ( most like the AMD graphics chip ) is just getting lose by the amount of heat. First I thought the idea was idiotic, but it doesn't seem to be and a sloppy design can very well lead to it.

Apple so fare ignores any suggestion that the overall design might be faulty. So they keep on exchanging logic boards for letting people paying for it. Which is good for them of course. But in the end they just put back a already faulty designed logic board which will eventually fail again.

Most people are just "moving" on and buying a new MBP from a later generation which seems not affected by the heat ( even the NVIDIA seem to be save, so I figured its a AMD issue together with the quadcore 7i).

But why in the world should you keep buying new MBP's if you can't be sure that Apple is really acknowleding the problem of wrongly designed components. Seems like somebody was overeager of getting the MBP 2011 model out or the quality control was fast asleep.

Please don't make reballing, instead of that let's join us all and let's look for a replacement program, however we need that this be taked into account in the corporative level so just write to www.apple.com/feedback and write about your problem, yesterday I talked with the apple support and that was they suggest me. So if you have friends and know pleople write to them and tell them, so let's look for a replacement program for the owners of early 2011 mac book pro with issues in the GPU AMD Radeon 6750M. By the way I want that all of this people in this forums know that yesterday my Early Mac book pro dead and know all that shows is a gray screen, that mac started showing all the issues describe in this forum and finally it dead.

LET'S WRITE TO www.apple.com/feedback AND LET'S LOOK FOR A REPLACEMENT PROGRAM.

I had the same issues you all are describing. I have posted on several threads about this. I eventually called Apple Support. Here are my results:

I called in and spoke with your average tech support and was eventually patched through to a senior advisor. My whole intention here was to start a discussion within Apple about this issue. Once I finally made that clear to the advisor, he proceeded to document the issue and reported it. Included in the report was the thread linked here ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2768351?answerId=24623619022#24623619022 ) as well as the MacWorld article regarding similar cases. ( http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/mac/widespread-2011-macbook-pro-failures-reported -3497935/ )

There was a couple of times I felt like I was being given the run-around. Such as when I was told that because the MacWorld article was from the United Kingdoms the Macbooks were fundamentally different than my own machine. But all in all I made my concerns clear. The call didn't afford me any more options. I wasn't generously offered to be taken care of or sent an overnight service center box. But, I made it clear that this issue needs to be acknowledged.

The senior advisor recommended that I post some instructions for people with the same issues (that's you guys).

Hassle free steps:

  1. Call Apple Care (800) APL-CARE (800-275-2273)
  2. Immediately ask to speak to a Senior Advisor
  3. Explain the issue and that you believe it to be a production flaw affecting a large group of Early 2011 Macbooks with AMD graphics
  4. Request the filing of a report stating so and give the thread mentioned above as referrence. I'm sure you could include other threads of similar experiences but since that one seems to have the most data I went with it.

The gist of my report was: Whenever my Macbook switches to AMD discreet graphics my screen will freeze and not boot up (to anything) afterwards until it (seemingly) randomly switched back to Intel graphics.

My options are still $310 for depot repair or upgrade altogether. I did voice the concern of having depot repair done and the problem not being truly solved. The senior advisor said it would be likely if a recall is issued that I could have my machine repaired again with the real solution and also be reimbursed $310. It's sounding like the option I will take to solve my immediate problem.

Every single person who has this issue needs to call in and voice a concern. Keep posting to this thread. Do what you can to get our problem solved.

It's February 13th 2014, and I have just spoken to 4 different Senior Advisors in 2 days. I recieved so many run arounds that it's not even funny. I have the AMD Radeon 6490 in my early 2011 15" Macbook Pro, and it has indeed conked out. Once more, Apple are refusing to comp the repair and are only offering the $310 firm rate as an alternative. The store, Computer Advantage has indeed come across this discussion board and is acknowledging that this is an issue, but Apple of course are being uncooperative. I find it ridiculous that engineering has the final say in these issues and there's no one else to talk to aside from the Senior Advisors.

If this is indeed a widespread issue, please call Apple and speak to a Senior Advisor at once! This is no joke, it's time a care package be implemented.

MacBook Model :

- MBP. 15-inch, Early 2011.

- Model Name: MacBook Pro

- Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2

- Processor 2.0 GHz Intel Core i7

- Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Serial Number (If you can provide): C02FLAMEDF8V

Country or Region: USA

Details: GPU malfunction. The computer started overheating for any usage. Then last time I tried to use another screen it started glitching and gave me the blue screen with vertical lines. I am in a Mac Store right now and just registered the problem. They want to charge me $310, flat rate to fix any problems in my computer. I want to see if we can get the recall.

The problem is too recurrent to be a sporadic or malfunction in one or other MBP. 3 years it is too little for such an investment (around $2,000). A MBP should give at least 5 years with moderate usage. I have MBP working for 7, 8 years after a lot of bumps on the road (kids, falling, even the hard drive still works perfectly... just changing the battery and works like new! – with a lot of dings! ! LOL).
