Issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011

I am wondering if anybody else is having issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011?

It seems that when the Intel graphics card is in use all is ok, but when the AMD switches on the fans kick on and the MBP starts to get really hot, then the video fails with various issues ranging from a split screen, pinstripe lines, black screen, etc. All I can do is power off. Then, even after cooling down, it might take overnight before I can power it back on and have a working computer. Resetting SMC, PRAM, NVRAM, etc. is of no help. I can't get it to go into safe mode at all. I can't even get it to boot off the OSx install disk until I wait 8 - 12 hours. I swapped hard drives and reseatted the RAM, but my diagnostics say all is ok. I also took it to the genius bar and their diagnostics show no issues as well, but the tech says it is a failing video card and Apple will replace it for $310.

A few questions I have are:

Is this another NVidia-type of issue that will eventually result in a lawsuit?

I thought the video card was built into the logic board, if so, does that mean the logic board will be replaced?

Is $310 a fair charge for this repair?

Should I have purchased AppleCare when I had a chance? I thought spending $2000+ for a MBP would be better than the sub $500 laptops at malwart and other places.

I am having the same exact issue. My discreet 6750 is the culprit. The computer works ok with the integrated HD3000. I am going to the apple store today to see about getting it fixed. I have AppleCare so it shouldn't cost me anything. These things happen from time to time.

This is a cooling problem.

Download gfxCardStatus v2.3 and choose "integrated only". This will avoid the computer using the failed AMD chip that was partially disconnected from the logic board because of overheating.

Some people are just doing a Reflow others a reballing with a new chipset.

After this you may avoid putting the computer into a situation that can favour a overheat like working on the lap, over the bed, over a wood table... etc any material that can create a more insulated environment under the laptop.

So APPLE must finally solve this malfunction that is occuring due a poorly projected logic board that can overheat untill the solding points melt down!!!

This is like putting a motor in a car that simply melts down due to a lack of proper cooling.

Mine crashed after installing OSX Mavericks. Many people are in the same situation. OSX Mavericks uses more processing power letting the graphics card with a more hostile environment. Since the computer becomes so overheated, it melts down the solder points and they become less conductible and that will let to an instable graphics situation making evryone angry.

Macintosh users are heavy users, We work on a MAC because we WORK.

So we deserve the respect that APPLE claims to itself doing a Laptop for US$2000.

I have one more computer to add to the very long list of disgruntled early 2011 Macbook Pro's. What a dissapointment! I also had the 2008 MBP with problems associated with video. At least with that computer they addressed the problem and provided out of warranty service and after 2 logic board replacements that computer is still running. I did not buy my 2011 MBP with the expectation that it would last forever but when there is a clear problem with so many computers using the AMD GPU it is hard to immagine a company like apple ignoring their loyal high-end user base. I would gladly pay the $300 (if I am lucky) to have the logic board replaced if Apple would acknoledge the problem and provide some assurance that it has been corrected. I will think twice before dropping $2.5K for another high end machine.

makes sense from what I've been reading Biancaf.

I to have a MacBook Pro late 2011 that I've had for around 3 1/2 years that has started doing this. So badly now that I can't keep it started long enough to access much on it. I may try taking it to someone to work on, which I've never had to do with my macs before ever.

I'm a photographer and love my macs this is a shame to see so many discouraged with apple products.

I can't believe I'm saying it, but I don't think I'm buying any more laptops for a while - just hoping that it doesn't translate to my macmini now.

Add me to the list. Early 2011 17 inch MacBook Pro. Logic board needed replaced after one year of light usage. Is in the repairs right now again. Logic board might need replacing again as I was told. Battery too. This is unacceptable. These machines are far, far too expensive to be ending up in for new logic boards over and over.

New machine or I'm never buying another Apple product. Soon after getting my machine I talked my sister into getting one and I am sorry I did.

It's not just that there are repeated problems with logic board failures it's Apple's response and lack thereof that is an issue for me. You cannot charge what you do for a product claiming the reason is "It just works" and allowing sales people to say these are work horses when in fact they repeatedly fail.

I want a replacement and I feel I've been reasonable enough about this. My MacBook Pro was a LEMON.

I have Applecare which runs out in two weeks. I've had issue after issue with this laptop and nobody offered me any replacement. Logic board failed after one year. head phone jack didn't work out of the box, it's in for repairs again right now probably the logic board they said. Instead of buying Applecare with a new laptop I just think I'll avoid spending 3500 dollars for a laptop that has myriad issues right out of the freaking box. I.E. NOT an Apple computer.

Same problem here:

MacBook Pro - 17-inch, Early 2011 (AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB)

Since day 1 its crashed when using the graphics to its full potential for even short periods of time. The machine just stalls and needs a hard reset.

I persisted with it after having 1 replacement always ensured the MBP was on my desk with good clearance and cooling. Wish I had got a refund looking back now as they are so **** expensive and im out of warranty now.

This issue should have been a free recall or replacememnt!!

Apple screwed us on this one.

This is very helpful info. One day after installing OSX Mavericks my computer starting crashing exactly the same as everyone else's. One week later I can't reboot at all. I took it in to Genius Bar here in Houston, and after running diagnostic check they determined I needed a new logic board. Despite my macbook having all the symptoms of a GPU problem no one mentioned that being a possibility, or that my problems had anything to do with my installing Mavericks - despite the incredible timing coincidence :-)!

They want $526 for a new logic board - I'm going to show them this thread first.
