Issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011

I am wondering if anybody else is having issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011?

It seems that when the Intel graphics card is in use all is ok, but when the AMD switches on the fans kick on and the MBP starts to get really hot, then the video fails with various issues ranging from a split screen, pinstripe lines, black screen, etc. All I can do is power off. Then, even after cooling down, it might take overnight before I can power it back on and have a working computer. Resetting SMC, PRAM, NVRAM, etc. is of no help. I can't get it to go into safe mode at all. I can't even get it to boot off the OSx install disk until I wait 8 - 12 hours. I swapped hard drives and reseatted the RAM, but my diagnostics say all is ok. I also took it to the genius bar and their diagnostics show no issues as well, but the tech says it is a failing video card and Apple will replace it for $310.

A few questions I have are:

Is this another NVidia-type of issue that will eventually result in a lawsuit?

I thought the video card was built into the logic board, if so, does that mean the logic board will be replaced?

Is $310 a fair charge for this repair?

Should I have purchased AppleCare when I had a chance? I thought spending $2000+ for a MBP would be better than the sub $500 laptops at malwart and other places.

I am having the same exact issue. My discreet 6750 is the culprit. The computer works ok with the integrated HD3000. I am going to the apple store today to see about getting it fixed. I have AppleCare so it shouldn't cost me anything. These things happen from time to time.

Exactly the same with me. It seems that mavericks could not deal with the overload correctly and let the chip meltdown... Doing a Reflow doesn't work since the the solder is a league of metals, a low temperature melting creates a very heterogenic crystalline reticulat reducing the capacity of eletronic conductivity due to anomalies in the electronic flow.

Apple's position? Complete DENIAL OF SERVICE.

add me to the many list of complaints! My early 2011 17" MacBook Pro Which has been looked after very well and has developed the classic graphics card issue everyone has been talking about recently. When is apple going to admit this is a failure with components they used to make the laptop? I think it is discussing that a computer that cost me £2300 under three years ago has failed in this way and apple refuse to take responsibility for their failures. I am considering legal advise to see what rights they and us have regarding this issue.

If anyone starts up a dedicated website for this complaint I would be a willing participant!

Although a really love MacBook Pros overall this experience has left me seriously considering other companies and not apple laptops.

The complaints are building apple!

SO upset! Same exact problems as listed here, on same machine, after Mavericks upgrade. Hadn't heard back after 9 days, after sending it off for $310 plus tax service agreement. Took 3 different transfers and 17 minutes on hold to be told they are requoting $610 plus tax because of liquid damage. There is NO WAY! When I finally got the email that they "said" they sent 6 days ago, you can't see the pics of "said damage" because the link is broken. Rep sends an email with all her personal contact info, then doesn't pick up or return the call from my husband 5 minutes later. I don't lie, and there was no liquid damage. She said it looked like coffee or coke. I don't drink soda and we don't even have a coffee pot. My kids are 15 and have their own PC laptops. No one uses this machine but me. So disappointed and angry. I feel like the dumbest person ever for being such an Apple cheerleader. Terrible customer service! I don't feel like I can trust them, now. So do I pay over $600 on what will be considered an old machine or enjoy my $2000+ paperweight?

sandyfromnorth sydney,

There's probably nothing wrong with the GPU - more than likely you're suffering that which most of here are suffering as well: a defectively soldered GPU.

If you can find a BGA reball in Sydney, go to one that will reball the GPU and give you at leasta one-year warranty. DON'T pay to have the logic board replaced - many users find that a logic board replacement may not last more than 3-4 days. Get your machine FIXED with a reball - cost should be under $200AU.

Good luck,

Clinton

Same problem, same “solution” for my 15' Late 2011, bought in Italy in January 2012. I didn't change the Logic Board and I'm working with the Intel integrated GPU only, with all the limits of this solution as I manually removed all AMD drivers and this affects other aspects of the computer.

Apple is responding in a very unprofessional way for this issue.

My mb pros video card died 14 months after purchase and was replaced by apple free of charge, the tech at the time said this was a common problem. Now for the last 3 weeks since 10.9.3 combo update my mb pro has gone to **** once again, something has definitely been done by apple to the graphics drivers or the way in which the OS handles video now. I am currently on 10.9.4 and things are slightly better, though once something graphic intensive is being done, the screen will distort, go black (keyboard still lit), or simply freeze (no mouse movement), the only fix is for the mac to be turned off for 15 minutes or more, and press the power button with your fingers crossed.

Tried SMC reset (screen goes black after apple logo)

Tried PRAM reset (screen goes black after apple logo)

Tried Safe Mode (screen goes black after apple logo)

Tried booting of external HD (10.9.2) (screen goes black after apple logo)

Tried Recovery mode (screen goes black after apple logo)

Thought I'd share my find after countless forums and message boards with the same problem only to have apple genius tell all the same thing - that it's a logic board issue and that the graphics chip or processor is possibly damaged.

Well I found through other such cases that the logic board doesn't necessarily have to be replaced as the apple geniuses would have us all believing. Apparently pc users get the same problem too, and according to techs that fix pc's all the time, this screen problem and inability to boot is an easy and fast fix, it's generally related to a graphics chip problem where the soder that binds the chip to the logic board has softened due to overheating. If you take your mbp to a pc tech who also deals in fixing Macs, he will be able to do what's called a reflow, which is a process of rebinding or resodering any loose pins back to the logic board. According to them this is a simple fix. Only takes two hours max to complete! Do as I did, find yourselves a Computer tech in your neighborhood using yelp, mine quoted me only $80, and only need to pay if he's able to fix it and if thats the only issue! Of course, for some people, your chip may be cracked or fried, therefore only a new board would be advised, but please try this first before letting apple genius convince you to turn yours in for some rediculous fees and dollar amounts of up to $1200 in some cases I've read.

The logic board is repairable folks if it's only loose soder...just as long as there's nothing else wrong with the graphics chip and nothing else is cracked or damaged like the board itself, connectors, the drive, etc...there may be hope yet! So find yourself a pc tech who knows about doing a reflow...this may solve your problem!
