Issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011

I am wondering if anybody else is having issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011?

It seems that when the Intel graphics card is in use all is ok, but when the AMD switches on the fans kick on and the MBP starts to get really hot, then the video fails with various issues ranging from a split screen, pinstripe lines, black screen, etc. All I can do is power off. Then, even after cooling down, it might take overnight before I can power it back on and have a working computer. Resetting SMC, PRAM, NVRAM, etc. is of no help. I can't get it to go into safe mode at all. I can't even get it to boot off the OSx install disk until I wait 8 - 12 hours. I swapped hard drives and reseatted the RAM, but my diagnostics say all is ok. I also took it to the genius bar and their diagnostics show no issues as well, but the tech says it is a failing video card and Apple will replace it for $310.

A few questions I have are:

Is this another NVidia-type of issue that will eventually result in a lawsuit?

I thought the video card was built into the logic board, if so, does that mean the logic board will be replaced?

Is $310 a fair charge for this repair?

Should I have purchased AppleCare when I had a chance? I thought spending $2000+ for a MBP would be better than the sub $500 laptops at malwart and other places.

I am having the same exact issue. My discreet 6750 is the culprit. The computer works ok with the integrated HD3000. I am going to the apple store today to see about getting it fixed. I have AppleCare so it shouldn't cost me anything. These things happen from time to time.

I have now did the same as you OWL973, disabled AMD drivers through single user mode and mac starts and works though is very slow in displaying anything, and forget about watching video.

Sort it out Apple, i'm 100% that if this happened to the money making machine that is iOS and the iPhone there would have been quick fixes and recalls weeks after the fact, certainly not years.

For someone who has used macs since they were beige i'm very disappointed.

Unfortunately, after two and half years of excellent performance, my MBP late 2011 model A1826 15'' 2.2 has the same problem with AMD Radeon HD 6750. Now I can only work with Intel HD Graphics 3000. As far as I'm located in Greece now, the cost is 600 €, translated to 810 $ plus the postal service. I don't know if it's worthy to have it repaired.

My laptop can't handle any high intensity graphics. Just dies.

I agree with your take on this . . . mavericks update too much for logic board/graphics card (Chipset Model: AMD Radeon HD 6750M).

The only way i managed to log in is disabled AMD drivers, but it doesn't load the intel chip, is more like a generic driver, let me move the files and some apps work most don't, not a solution still a brick just now you can make it play sounds, with maveriks finder works, with mountain lion crash every time i tried to open something.

Just had mine die 3 months out of apple care. When it was under warranty I had the logic board replaced for some random problem (I can't remember what happened but I remember they replaced the logic board), then the harddrive went, then a key on the keyboard got stuck. So that was three repairs under warranty and now 3 months out warranty the things gives up the ghost. This thing was a lemon. So annoyed at apple over this, going to the store tomorrow to vent. Not holding out much hope.

Same problem here... I used to be able to launch it on safe mode and then shut it down properly and it worked for a bit, but not anymore, normal boot takes me to a grey screen, safe boot takes me to a blue (kinda striped) screen. What ***** more is that I need to get some work done and I'm broke, so I can't afford a repair. Thanks Apple.

Thanks for your initiative.

My daughter's Late 2011 15" MBP now failed with same issues. I spend 1670 Euro!!, but the MBP didn't last even 3 years!! That's not what I expect from a premium product. I'm really frustrated with Apple product quality and Customer Service. This also because my son had similar problems/costs with a nVidia? GP failing on his 2008? MB, and Apple Store told him he wouldn't qualify for the Exchange and Repair Extension Programs for some resons.

A bad experience, I must say.

The same problem occurred to my early 2011 MBPro about a year ago. Fortunately it was still under Applecare. I had to bring it in twice; the first time they told me it was a software problem, even though I knew it was not, they still did a reinstall of MOS 10.8. It booted once at the store, and as soon as I got it home it failed again - straight to the funky screen problem - "video fails with various issues ranging from a split screen, pinstripe lines" and a frozen blue screen. This time I took screen shots to show the store tech. They took it back and replaced my Motherboard and RAM. They never acknowledged that it was the AMD graphics chip that was causing the problem, but instead blamed on my perfectly good RAM.

So now I'm on my 2nd Motherboard, crossing my fingers, and hoping that it continues working as my MBPro is now no longer covered under Applecare.

I'm a long time Apple user; I actually bought and still have an original 128K Mac (and many others since then), but this defect on a $2500 notebook computer, and Apple's failure to take responsibility for this problem and to offer a reasonable fix for it, has left me questioning whether my next computer will come from Apple.

After multiple clean installs, replacing hard drive, apple diagnostic, etc. I believe I have the same issue and am really bummed out. I have the late 2011 MBP w/ the AMD Radeon HD 6770M as well as the integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000. I am using gfxCardStatus as a workaround but am really afraid to even reboot my laptop. I spent over $2000 and expect to get more than 3 years out of a laptop. This was my first Apple purchase and have been in the "Apple" ecosystem ever since. I really hope that they recall these and make good.

Same here

Pink everywhere, no warranty

All quotes for repair around 650+ euro

So i dissambled the thing myself, full of dust so no wonder i got hot..

Cleaned it, and also removed gpu cooling and put new cooling paste on it.

Then i used a hair dryer to give it a heat boost on and around the gpu and back of it..

( saw this with red ring of death on an X-Box ;-) )

Reassembled all and Eureka!,, its works again

But for how long , i dont know..

All at own risk...

on July 22nd I had my early 2011 mbp 15 to apple 3 months after warrantee expired bad logic board.

$310 + tax and repaired.

this macbook sat on a desk for its whole life and was connected to the Apple TB monitor the entire life.

so I am saying this specific macbook pro has as close to zero handling as you can get and still happened.

my fear is that it will happen again and i will than be SOL...

I can only hope Apple will do the right thing and replace all our our systems with equal systems.

Also have an Alienware gaming laptop that i purchased same time and it is flawless, Apple Step it up...

If Steve were still here this would already be fixed!
