Issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011

I am wondering if anybody else is having issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011?

It seems that when the Intel graphics card is in use all is ok, but when the AMD switches on the fans kick on and the MBP starts to get really hot, then the video fails with various issues ranging from a split screen, pinstripe lines, black screen, etc. All I can do is power off. Then, even after cooling down, it might take overnight before I can power it back on and have a working computer. Resetting SMC, PRAM, NVRAM, etc. is of no help. I can't get it to go into safe mode at all. I can't even get it to boot off the OSx install disk until I wait 8 - 12 hours. I swapped hard drives and reseatted the RAM, but my diagnostics say all is ok. I also took it to the genius bar and their diagnostics show no issues as well, but the tech says it is a failing video card and Apple will replace it for $310.

A few questions I have are:

Is this another NVidia-type of issue that will eventually result in a lawsuit?

I thought the video card was built into the logic board, if so, does that mean the logic board will be replaced?

Is $310 a fair charge for this repair?

Should I have purchased AppleCare when I had a chance? I thought spending $2000+ for a MBP would be better than the sub $500 laptops at malwart and other places.

I am having the same exact issue. My discreet 6750 is the culprit. The computer works ok with the integrated HD3000. I am going to the apple store today to see about getting it fixed. I have AppleCare so it shouldn't cost me anything. These things happen from time to time.

2 Macbook 2011, and broken togheter, Apple don't recognized as bad project, but we are thousands people... 4000 € gone, no warranty nothing. It's a shame.

There are basically thousand of MBP 2011 users who face the same glitches (in combination with heat issues), so do I....

The display ends up distorting, or going entirely blank, and while reboots make

the problems go away for a short period of time - it always returns. Also I can notize, that things getting worse, day by day (i have to reboot my mac at least 5-10 days a day) and the gray and blue screens of death appears now on every start (it always need 2-3 tries for OSX to properly start).

Anyway, since so many users (as I said, a few thousands) are facing the same problem, this is clearly a production issue with AMD/Apple.

If no replacement program will be instituted (as was with the IMACS with the AMD graphic cards), then this was clearly my last Apple product (2900€ for a MBP that does not work properly after 3 years, puts Apple at the very bottom of my choice for my next laptop).

I ended up having the ATI chipset replaced and reballed at a professional lab in the UK...half the price of the Apple new logic board and hopefully less prone to failing again...

Same problem. Twice. The first time, it happened within the Apple Care. Now it's way past that. We can't just chuck away this expensive piece of hardware, because of a manufacturing defect by Apple. At the same time, we can't just keep waiting for Apple to make up their mind and start the replacement programme years later. :/ I can't afford another one now.

I have a feeling this is falling on deaf years.

I paid £169 (215 Euro) for the repair plus the cost of shipping it there and back (around £25/31 Euro)...

so, not the cheapest, but cheaper and hopefully a bit more permanent than Apple's logic board replacement.

No idea whether these labs exist in Germany, but I guess they do...

Thanks. It does sound a bit more affordable, rather than spending 650-700 Euro on a new chipset (which will eventually fail because of the culprit, ATI).

Same story in Italy:

- macbook pro 15 early 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M

- GPU gone for the 2nd time, need to replace the logic board, again...

- warranty expired

- repair estimate: more than 600€

Pretty strange compared to the 360$ in the US

Extremely disappointed and frustrated especially after being a loyal Apple fan for more than 15 years.

So it is not not just early 2011. Late 2011 MBP with AMD Radeon HD 6750M crashes. So far crashing happens when it wakes up from sleep. Aging issues. Looks like it has a faulty design. putting it in safe mode does not help.

The Radeon cards are inherently failing after a short time. Everyone with a 2011 MBP is GOING to run into this expensive problem eventually. Apple is not only ignoring this problem, they are taking active measures to cover it up.

same here ..

after installing Yosemite the graphics goes crazy and the fan starts to blow. Switching it on/off works till I start a browser or another graphics utlilzing program.
