xcode won't run.

While moving HD icon I placed it on top of or near the xcode icon on desktop. now xcode won't run. All hardware tested fine at apple and we reinstalled operating system. also HD icon removed from desk. Activity monitor %150 from xcode. Xcode removed and reinstalled twice. Girl at Genius bar stumped too.

@xnav : perfect description of the problem, and your solution solved the issue on my side

I had this happen when I accidently told Xcode too open the directory that contains all my projects. If Xcode works from a new/different user ID then try deleting everything that starts:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dt.* under the user experiencing the problem.

Plug in the disk, turn on Time Machine in

 > System Preferences... Time Machine

and backup your system.

While you're in that System Prefs panel, what's that 'Total Access' at the bottom (in the 'Other' row)?

Do you or did you once have an internet service provider called 'Earthlink' and is that something you installed in your OS prior to 10.7?

If yes, get rid of it (AFTER the Time Machine backup is finished!) - It looks like a strong candidate for the problem. Follow the instructions here if you don't have uninstall instructions from the developer:

Try removing everything from login items in the affected account, then rebooting the mac.

Go to

 > System Preferences > Users & Groups | Login items

Make a note of what's in the list, then highlight them all and hit the - minus button under the list.

Restart the mac and test Xcode.

If that solves the problem, you can add things back to the list one at a time, restarting after each one and testing Xcode again till you isolate the troublemaker (or you can just leave the list empty; keeps your start up times fast and clean).

What command did you try in the terminal?

To move the preference file do:

Make sure Xcode is not running.

In Finder select Go from the top menu, Hold down the option key and your home Library folder will be visible in the list of folders, select it. In the Finder window that opens select Preferences. Find the com.apple.Xcode.plist file and move it to the Desktop or Trash.

Restart Xcode.

First of all, back up your system.

Try uninstalling any Affinegy products from your user account and restarting. Test Xcode.

I don't see much else in your user acount, but as an aside I'd also take a look at that Silex driver. Have you updated it for Mountain Lion? If not, do so. If you don't use it anymore, remove it.

After updating or uninstalling anything, restart the mac and test.

thanks Frank, sorry I thought( ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Xcode.plist) was a terminal command.

I gave up and went to apple yesterday to try a "clean and reinstall" but one of the techs found an errant file

and now xcode finally seems to be running fine. The trashed items are below (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Xcode.plist is in there). Would you mind letting me know if it's ok to trash all of these.

If you want to use Terminal, enter this command:

ls -al FOLDER_THAT_HOLDS_YOUR_XCODE_PROJECTS/mx_sw_ch/mx_sw_ch.xcodeproj/project.xcworkspace/xcuserdata/YOUR_ID.xcuserdatad

You need to substitute something like '/Users/YOUR_ID/myProjects' for FOLDER_THAT_HOLDS_YOUR_XCODE_PROJECTS, and your Mac user ID for YOUR_ID.

The output of the command should show the UserInterfaceState.xcuserstate file and its ownership like this:

-rw-r--r-- 1 myID myID 13681 Dec 2 2011 UserInterfaceState.xcuserstate
-rw-r--r-- 1 myID myID 29637 Sep 7 2010 WorkspaceState.xcuserstate
