Received a new cMBP and Airport Express...

Hello-

I received my configured cMBP today and I had an old Airport Extreme but I also purchased w new Airport Express.

I have a few questions. I still have not opened the box because I want to make sure they configured the MBP like I configured it and paid for. I am hoping they will be able to check this at the Apple Store. Can I bring my old MBP and my new MBP to an Apple Store and have them help me set up the new MBP? Also, I have the old (about 5 years old) Airport Extreme hooked up working with my old MBP but I would like to get the Airport Express hooked up. is that failry straight forward? I think Mountain Lion has a utility that walks one through the set up. Anybody know if this is true.

I looked up my serial number on google and the machine that came up is not what I ordered and paid for. For example it says that the machine with the serial number I typed has a 750 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive and 15.4" widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display (1440x900 native resolution). However, I paid for the 512GB Solid State Drive and the anti glare Hi Res screen.

anybody know of a site that has the acurate confiuration when the serial number is put in?

I know this is really basic, but I am not sure what to do. should I take it to the apple store first so they can help me tansfer the data on my old MBP to my new MBP and give me some pointers on hooking up the airport Express?

If I add some RAM to the MBP I just received from Apple will that void the Applecare? any suggestions on a good place that helps a novice add some RAM and has the tools like a 00 Phillips driver? Somebody in another forum told me awhile back that if I get a new MBP I will need a T Driver to remove the screws and install the new RAM. I had never heard of a T Driver.

It says this is a mid 2012 MBP. Do they not make late 2012 or early 2013 models?

I have looked at many websites and videos. One has a stick that is to disconnect the battery from the cable in the back of the battery. One website says to use a T Driver and this has caused the most uncertainty in these forums. all I can say is the lady at Crucial said she has had sevral people with new MBPs that have complained that they did not need the phillips 00 driver but a T Driver. I hear that she might have been confused and that might be for the HD or SSD install.

ifixit says to get a spudger too.

yea, you are supposed to disconnect the battery cable. That is what the spudger is for as iFixit has on their website. As far as Apple charging too uch for RAM, I could not get Apple to install the 16 GB for me. that was an interesting evening, all the supervisors, executive tech agents, etc..I talked to an got a different answer from all of them. One would say we do not support putting that much RAM in the MBP. I asked why do you have the slots for 16 Gb then? The next Executive tech agent aid yea we do support it but for some reson we stopped offering it. One sales agent told me they only offer max 6 GB after I just saw that the new MBPs came with 8 GB. Anyway, it is like they all were making up what they felt like. Strange. I have no idea how much Apple would charge becaause they do not ofer it in the configuratin.

I could take it to an Apple reseller or retailer or whatever those shops are called that I see, but they charge a lot too. If I only would not be getting so much conflicting information on what I need and what RAM would be ideal.

I posted what my MBP came with and was wondering what I look for when I go to one of these websites? There are so many numbers, how important is it to get the same RAM that I will be taking out? I am thinking I better save that RAM in case there is an applecare issue. I did pay for applecare but I got no information about applecare. I think Apple is realy going down. They have made too much money and the customer service just from the last time I purchased a new computer is so much worse. Not just with one person but nearly everybody I have talked to. I do not even kow who to email or call to complain. have you tried to find a number or email address to reach Apple customer service or support lately (on a new purchase?) it is not the way it used to be.

Yeah - there are 'spudgers' in the toolkit that I bought from OWC to do my 'Mac-surgery'... replacing RAM and upgrading to the Crucial SSD. The spudger is good for disconnecting the battery (something I've never done - save on my original MacBook Pro when you had to remove the user-replaceable battery to access the RAM slots).

Get the OWC toolkit - has everything you'll ever need.

Clinton-

I have not opened the box yet because what if they did not put the SSD drive in for me? The serial check says it came with a glossy display but I paid for the Hi Res anti glare. so I am thinking if by chance china did make a big error I will be at the Apple Store and they can take it back.

so I have Airport Extreme going now, but Express is much easier? I hope so because getting this 5 year old Extreme was tough.

any place you find where it is clear and you know they have good RAM with the right stick on both sides, and some instructions, I will go there. I went to OWC I think babowa told me to go to but I could not find the instructions or even what they would recommend for my MBP. Most sites at least have a place to enter your serial number and then tell you what you need.

First go to the Crucial website - here is the RAM upgrade kit that's right for your model.

Then go here - the OWC website that has the video on the proper way to install the RAM.

Personally, I prefer Crucial memory over that of any other - but OWC's RAM, I'm sure, is just as good. I just think that Crucial's is the 'best'.

Good luck,

Clinton, I know I will get the took kit, but I want to make sure I get the right one.

Ans what about the RAM. is there a better kind? How do I know what numbers they need to know so I get the right RAM? I would like decent RAM, not from some underdeveloped country where it will fail in the first year. I went to OWC, but I could not find anyway or a program where they check out your computer and tell you what RAM to get.

Clinton you are the expert. I got this computer because you told me to. I went from one of your posts about getting the rMBP to another one about getting a cMBP. I could not understand that night why you were telling me one thing and someone else another thing. So do you think I should have gotten the rMBP?

there has got to be a better brand of RAM? do I need to make sure the 2, 8 GB sticks are exactly the same?

Can you find it on OWC the page on how to install RAM in a mid 2012 MBP? Like I found here on ifixit.com right here,

crucial gave me a bunch of bad information. In their video on how to install RAM in a new Mid 2012 MBP they are using a Dell computer. there is no similarity especially with getting the back open.

does the 00 screwdriver take care of all the 2 sizes of screws for remove the following ten screws securing the lower case to the upper case?

I gotta give you some points. it has been awhile since I bestowed some honor on you. :-)

thanks for your help. Never knew people from AL could sem fairly cool.

babowa, I was just on their website for an hour trying to find the exact RAM they would send me but I could not find that. They sure have a lot of info and studies that "show" how much better their RAM and HDs are. I will use any website that seems like I can order good RAM and get help and not have to send it back, wait longer, get something else to find out I need another too, etc. Like the Crucial chickie was telling me. I think she was just making things up so I would buy the RAM and she would never have to deal with me again.

All I know is I am as anxious to get the 8 GB out and the 16 GB in and I am going to do a clean install, and use the upgrades if I can get the, Most of the software I need comes from the university I teach at so they will upgrade my software I am sure.

None better than Crucial in my opinion - and I'm happy to have convinced you to get the non-Retina model!

Here's the Crucial link for what is the correct RAM kit for your model - http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=B77BEA08A5CA7304.

And here's the installatoin guide from OWC - http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_15_unibody_mid12_mem/.

And the lady that you talked to at Crucial incorrectly informed you if she told you that you need a Torx screwdriver to install RAM - you only need a Phillips #00 (and possibly a spudger if you want to play it safe and disconnect the battery) included in the toolkit here - http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/TOOLKIT11/.

Hope this helps,

Clinton

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade

from there you click on the 2012 and you get this:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_160 0MHz_SDRAM

It not only lists the models, but shows you the various RAM modules available for that model.

Just wanted to make it clear that it's easy to find - you can make your own decision. If I call Crucial and they aren't even capable of telling me which screwdriver I need, I wouldn't trust them with anything else either.

FWIW, there are only a very few RAM manufacturers and a lot of resellers simply put their own "brand" on - other than getting cheap junk, the point with buying quality RAM is to buy from the most trusted and reliable vendor.
