Another device using the same IP address

My wife's new MBP (mid 2012) keeps dropping the wireless network. I get a message saying that another device is using the same IP address. So, how does one change the IP address?

You don't change the ip address. You go into network settings on all your networked devices and make sure they all get their ip address using DHCP. Or, if you net a device to have a static ip address, make sure the staic ip address is outside the DHCP scope. Or, make sure your router is secure and that a neighbor is not using a static ip address while connected to your router.

Well I'm glad it is working today. If you get that same error I would disconnect the Airport Express and use just the main Modem/Router WiFi system.

In all honesty once a router, and the WiFi system on that router, is setup there should not be any reason to make any changes to it, Ever.

I personally have never used any Apple router, WiFi, Whatever, devices and the one big reason for that is you need a special program, Utility, installed on any device to access them (that is just inane). Instead of just logging into it from a web browser.

Yes, I will disconnect the AE if it occurs again. The AE was bought years back when we didnt have a wireless router, and for the ease of use for my wife when I was away. I've never bothered about it because everything was working ok. The issue only came up because it stopped connecting wirelessly and couldnt even find the network, especially with her new MBP. I think its a way for Apple to make old products obsolete without there being any reason except for 'planned obsolescence'. Thanks for being with me throughout. I appreciate it a lot.

I have the same problem with my MBP.

Sometimes it will connect to the network, sometimes it comes up with that error. My MBP is the only apple laptop connecting to the network. My iphone has no problem, xbox, other PC laptops. I looked up each devices IP figuring it might be one interfering with it.

There is approximately 6 devices connecting to my wifi network. 3 iphones, my MBP and two PC laptops. the modem is straight from our internet provider Bell Canada.

I really hate this problem and want it solved! I read through this post. Though need some guidance. Strangely enough it works right now. It does not drop the connection, but when i turn on the computer sometimes it cannot find it. I find if i restart the computer or unplug the router and and plug it back in it sometimes will work, sometimes not.

UPDATE:

I have found a solution to this problem. Or at least this worked for me. I am not sure if it will be permaent but oh well.

System Preferences> Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > TCP/IP

Then change the setting to "Using DHCP with Manual address"

Change your IP to suit your router address (perhaps by one or two digits at the end of your IP, dependins on its scope)

And you are done

HELLO EVERYONE,

I THINK I FOUND A SIMPLE FIX TO THIS "STUPID" PROBLEM>

>WHEN YOU REFRESH YOUR INTERNET SIGNAL FROM YOUR ROUTER, AND ASSUMING YOU HAVE AN IPHONE WITH YOU WITCH USES THE SAME IP ADRESS THEN HERE IS A SIMPLE FIX;

>>IGNORE COMPLETELY THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING "GENIUS' IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH THE INTERNET....THE ONLY THING YOU NEED TO DO ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR INTERNET GOING ON YOUR LAPTOP IS TO DO NOTHING. I MEAN DON'T HIT 'OK' or " cancel"..just hide the box somewhere and that's it..

.>PLEASE SEE IF IT WORKS FOR YOU..
