In addition to hopkapi's questions, are you using a static IP for your computer, and what version of OS X are you running?
I am using WIFI. I have no idea what Airport device I am using as I cant see there is one. Its a brand new mac, only 3 weeks old. The internet provider is Sky. The laptop was working as I managed to use it abroad but since coming back to the UK it doesnt work anymore. Sorry I am not very technical. I am using the latest edition of MAC OS X, 10.8.2
So you're using the Sky router. Go to System Preferences>Network and take a screenshot, then post it here. Thanks.
BTW, you've already marked the question solved.
Ah, so this is technically a forum for people who are using Apple routers, though considering I'm a fellow Sky customer I'm generally pretty aware of their network gear (including much nerdy grrring at their lack of proper PPPoE on the network side).
Just seen the second screenshot. Click the dropdown next to Network Name, then select the name of your wireless network, or if you didn't change it yourself, the wireless name on the sticker on the bottom of the Sky router. You'll find the password you need on the sticker too.
Well as I'm with Virgin Media I might not be able to help as much. Can you actually see your WiFi network? Have you tried renewing your DHCP lease? Have you tried pinging a host from your Mac (in Network Utility or Terminal)?
Just seen the 2nd screenshot. Connect to your Sky WiFi network using the provided name and password.

Yes my flatmate is connected and I have rebooted the Sky router a couple of times and nothing.
I have tried connecting to the wireless network and everytime i do it says the password is incorrect which its not.
OK try using any other machine to get to the Sky router's config page and change the password.
That's weird, just to clarify, you're using the password on the sticker, including the capitalisation it has, not the number it also has?
Is it a problem with the router or that I dont have an IP address? Would it be better if I can try and find an ethernet cable or is the only way to change the password?
Yes I am using the correct password but everytime I try and log on it says the password is incorrect but its not. My flatmate is connected and i have checked that the password is correct.
The problem is that it's failing to basically connect to the router at all, apparently due to the password being wrong, so the router doesn't hand it an IP address like it should.
I'd definately try changing it like edex suggests, and then see if it fixes it. Though it might bug your flatmate in terms of him having to connect to a differently named network and re-enter the password, you could also try changing the network name at the same time to make it less likely that an old, incorrect password for the same router, could get sent.
I guess i need a ethernet cable to do this? we dont have as my flatmate chucked it out.
