How do i link my ipad imessaged to my iphone imessages?

I just recieved an Ipad for christmas, and since christmas i have been trying to make my computer, iphone and ipad all sync. For some reason my ipad will sync everything except my imessages, even though my imessage is turned on. On the imessage help page it indicates that there is supposed to be a spot under settings that will allow me to imput my phone number so that i can send/recieve imessages on my ipad as well as my phone, but my ipad does not have the place to put a phone number, just an email. How do I set it up so that my imessages are linked?

On your phone go to settings and change it from your phone number to your appleid

On your Mini, under Settings, Messages, tap Send & Receive. If your other devices are all registered under the same Apple ID as your Mini, you should see those other addresses and your phone number.
