hotmail iphone connection to the server failed

Still no definitive answer for all circomstances on this issue : "hotmail iphone connection to the server failed"

Situation:

iPhone 5 iOS 6 updated

Mail setup for Hotmail using MS Exchange preset to see Hotmail folders

Setting worked ok for a week

Set to gather all mail, not just last 3 days, weeks, months.

Yesterday the problem started, Mail won't connect.

It's not a firewall problem, I tried on 3G and LTE connection with WFI off.

I also tried a Yahoo preset and it work. Also Safari works fine.

I deleted the account, shutdown iPhone, restarted, created new account

Trial 1:

Click Settings
Click Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Click Add account
Click HOTMAIL preset
Click Add Mail Account
Here you enter your hotmail address + password and click NEXT
Switch off the phone and switch it back on
Try to access your mail as usual from the MAIL icon on your desktop, got the message "connection to the server failed"

Trial 2:

Click Settings
Click Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Click Add account
Click MS EXCHANGE preset
Click Add Mail Account
Here you enter your hotmail address + password and click NEXT
Switch off the phone and switch it back on
Try to access your mail as usual from the MAIL icon on your desktop, got the message "connection to the server failed"

Trial 3:

Click Settings
Click Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Click Add account
Click OTHER
Click Add Mail Account
Here you enter your hotmail address + password and click NEXT
Switch off the phone and switch it back on
Try to access your mail as usual from the MAIL icon on your desktop

Used m.hotmail.com on server field. It offered the extensive setup like on Mail for mac with SMTP, SSL, etc.. which only knew to use m.hotmail.com on server, but instead the menu offer the typical incoming and outgoing server name. Still failed.

The setting were set to these setting by default and it worked: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/hotmail/send-receive-email-from-mail-client

But I don't want to set it to a POP account, I want a IMAP type setting.

So bottom line, the preset MS Exchange and Hotmail on iOS 6 won't work anymore. Why not when they worked for a while until yesterday ?

Nothing changes on iPhone setting.

Have you been able to login to your acct via web mail?

I know hotmail and yahoo mail servers were acting up today

How did you get it to work? Sign into a hotmail account or an "other" account? The email is working for under an "other" account, but it won't push the emails to my phone I have to fetch them which is really annoying.

I deleted my hotmail account on my phone and created a new one through "other". It works fine now.

Yes emailing does work to an extent I guess, but when setting it up thru an "other" account it doesn't let you push the emails, you have to fetch them everytime which is awful.

Hotmail exchange active sync is not working for everyone right now. It is a microsoft problem. To see if you are affected visit the microsoft status page while logged in (if you are not logged in it says everything is fine):

When I check it it says:

Problem	Hotmail is working for all web users and POP-based accounts. Some mobile device users relying on EAS (Active Sync) may see problems accessing their email, calendar and contacts. We are working to restore their access. Jan 08 1:18 PM
Updates	Fixing the problem is taking longer than we hoped. We'll provide an update by Jan 11 12:00 PM. We apologize for the lengthy interruption in service. Jan 10 12:05 PM

The problem persist with Hotmail (Outlook), GMail and other IMAP accounts. Any ideas besides create them again as "other"?

So this was definitely a server problem.

Thanks for the link to check in the future the status of the server.

Regarding how to actually setup iOS 6 for Hotmail, no need to use OTHER or EXCHANGE, they created a HOTMAIL preset for a reason and it works just fine. No need to dig deeper. It appears both Exchange and Hotmail give the same setup as far as I can tell. Exchange is for Exchange accounts... A regular Hotmail account should use Hotmail it appears.

Using HOTMAIL preset, I can setup which folder to sync, how long I want the sync back in time (3 days, ... , All).

It pushes itself.

Can you confirm?

I am using Mail 6.2 installed on a MacBookPro Retina 2.7 Ghz Intel Core i7 under OSX 10.8.2. Simultaneously I use an iPhone 5 under iOS 6.0.2

Havng said this I have an issue with my hotmail account and cannot solve it. The emails sent with the iPhone are not synchronized on the MacBookPro. I assessed that today and I think that it is a new issue. It is very annoying and I do not know how to solve this. Any idea please ?
