I have the special version (iMovie HD 6.04 as a .dmg as provided by Apple) working in Mountain Lion and use it.

The process to get it there is a bit painful though - if you have that version:

Install iLife 08 (the 6.04 version needs to have iLife 08 installed or it won't install).

Install iMovie HD 06 from .dmg (it will install in a separate folder)

Install iLife 09 and/or 11

(Use Software Update after each install)

I've used this install method with both Lion and Mountain Lion.

You will now have both iMovie HD and the latest version of iMovie installed. They do work together.

Since iMovie HD was the only version that processes losslessly, I still prefer to use it for all my projects. And, it is so much easier to do editing out/in of split second portions of frames.

If you have just the regular iLife 06, you can try it - you may (or may not - experiment) have to install a current version of iMovie first or, if iMovie HD installs, simply manually create a folder as shown in my screenshot and then install the current version.

Hi 1caj - iMovie HD certainly can be used with Mountain Lion. And - it is possible to simply copy and paste the app from an older computer's Application folder that has it installed. Believe me, that works perfectly. Just make sure that you have renamed the latest version of imovie on your computer to 'imovie 11' or similar.

Hi. So I'd like to ask what may be obvious but just so I am sure. I am still running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I already have iMovie HD 6.0.3 on my drive and useable. I also have iMovie 09 which I also use sometimes (but it still doesn't do what iMovie HD could do and I do not have iMovie 11) If I simply buy Lion or Mountain Lion (whatever is available and install the new operating system on my current computer (ie not changing anyhting else), will my iMovie HD stay there and be useable?

I think I do have the .dmg from when Apple sent it out for iMovie HD 6.0.4 but I currently have 6.0.3 on my computer since I did not have to actually change it and had no problems (I put in iMovie 09 with iMovie 06 still there.) It says it is a Universal app in my "get info" Would I have to do anyhting different to keep it? I have been dragging my feet on upgrading to the Lions bc I have old programs that run on Rosetta still, but I know that I will have to make a move at some point. Keeping my iMovie HD would be a relief.

Thanks -- you guys are always so helpful!

Hi,

I've got a refurb 2011 iMac that came with iMovie 11 and a free upgrade to Mountain Lion which is installed and running with no issues...

However, I'm doing a lot of camcorder Digital 8 video capture and want to burn it to DVD in the best quality possible which I understand from many sources is not iMovie 11 but iMovie 06/iMovie HD.

I was about to buy a disk based version of iMovie 06 (actually iLife 06) to install but from what I read above, in order for it to work in ML it needs to be ver 6.0.4. I seem to have a problem in that even if I get the disk version installed, I can only patch it to 6.0.3 as that's all thats available in the Apple Update downloads.

Are my hands tied here? Is there another solution?

Also, if I get 06 installed, is it possble to keep 11 at the same time?

Tx

Hi PCNYC - I have iMovie 6.0.3 on my Macbook Air running ML and it works perfectly. But note that I installed it by simply copying it from the Apps folder of an older Mac, and then pasting it into the Macbook Air's apps folder. The already installed imovie 11 was unaffected by this.

If you want the Themes as well (I don't use them) you also need to copy and paste the Themes folder found here:

Library>Application Support>iMovie>Themes

I've heard from people who have 6.03 installed and they said it works. It should work if you have the install disk, but I can't guarantee it - I only have the 6.04 version from Apple as a .dmg (and you need iMovie 08 in order for that installer to work). In order for both old and new versions to co-exist, you need to install the old version first. Again, I don't know if Apple's special version is different, but if 06is installed and you install a newer version, the newer installer will automatically create a folder "previous version" for the older one. You might try to create such a folder yourself if necessary. I would certainly try to install the old iMovie - the best way would be to clone your system to another drive and then try to install it on a clone - that way you won't mess up your system in case it balks.

I prefer using 06 because it does not compress the video and you can edit it more precisely - although it is missing some of the newer improvements on it.

Hi babowa - 6.0.3 and 6.0.4 are identical so far as function is concerned, but the latter has to believe that imovie 08 has been installed already. See below how to do that. I have done it myself before in the past, and it works perfectly. Before doing so I always rename the existing imovie in some way so that it is not simply called 'imovie'. But for my latest install of imovie HD6 onto a MacBook Air, I simply did as I described above - copy the actual 6.0.3 app from an older Mac and paste into the new computer.

To install 6.0.4:

you must convince your computer that imovie 08 is already installed! This is easily done:
1. Copy this line of text (Command/C) –
"touch /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLife08.plist" [don’t include the quotes] 2. Open Terminal (found in Applications/Utilities) and Paste in that line (Command/V)
3. Hit the Return key, then quit Terminal.

4. Lastly, install imovie 6 from the .dmg file

Hi babowa - yes, sorry to have added that post. It was really just to add info to the general discussion. And actually there is now another bit of info that some may find useful.

Just in the last hour I added 6.0.4 to a new Mac Mini running Mountain Lion, without losing the already installed latest imovie version and without needing to install imovie 08 first, or even to use the Terminal command (see above).

What I did was as follows:

1. Changed the latest imovie's name to its specific version to 'protect it'.

2. Copied the folder called 'imovie (previous version' found in the Applications folder of an older computer, which housed imovie 6.0.4.

3. Pasted it into the Apps folder of the Mac Mini.

Both versions of imovie now work perfectly. So really all I am saying is that those who are worried about installing both, or the older version's compatibility with Mountain Lion need not fear. I am of course assuming that most people will have access to HD6 on their older machines.
