iTunes wont open!!

My computer was acting strange so I downloaded an AntiSpyware from McAfee and ever since I ran the program my iTunes wont open. I guess I deleted or "cleaned" all of the files and programs that were potentiall harmful. Did I maybe delete something that I needed in order to open my iTunes? Someone please help. I never backed up any of my music and I don't want to lose it all!!

when i try to open itunes.

hi harpo!

Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close

the first thing that i check for when people report getting that message when they try to launch their itunes is a broken QuickTime.

try to open your QuickTime. does it launch properly, or do you get an error message?

if you get an error message, the first thing we'll try is a careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall.

download and save a copy of the QT 7.0.4 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.

Quicktime 7.0.4 Standalone Installer

if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?

(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

hi cayliel!

okay, let's do a manual check for a w32.pinfi inspection.

have a look in your TEMP directory. it's normally a hidden folder, so you may have to change your view settings.

in "my computer", go "tools > folder options" and click on the "view" tab. select "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types".

do you see a strange looking 7-character filename with a .tmp extension in there? the first three letters would be letters. the last four would be numbers, or the letters A through F.

Hi,

I had the same problems with iTunes. After trying everything, I reinstalled Windows and installed iTunes 4.7, hoping an old version would resolve the problem. But even the older version didn't change anything.

I have a file like that, and I followed your link.

Is the way stated on the symantec website the only way to get rid of this? Cause I don't have any antivirus software installed.

What are the chances of my iTunes library files being infected?

Thanks,

Greg.

Hi I'm having the same problem. I bought my Ipod Video 2 weeks ago. I was able to install music in my Ipod using my IBM Thinkpad laptop. AFter it was completed, the message do not disconnect is still flashing in my Ipod. So I tried disconnecting it through safely remove hardward button. AFter that i got this message " iTunes.exe - Corrupt File. The file or directory/ ipod_control/ itunes/temp.file2 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility". All the music in my medial library vanished. SO i tried re-intalling the iTunes and finally i got the music back in my Ipod and media library. The following day I can't add music to my Ipod Video because my laptop can't read that my Ipod is already connected. How come my laptop can't read anymore that my Ipod is connected when it's working just the other day? Please help me. How do i fix the corrupted file. Should i just re-install again the iTunes or is my USB port damaged?

hi souledeluxe!

Cause I don't have any antivirus software installed.

... that's actually more of a worry than the fact that your itunes isn't launching at the moment. at least get one of the reputable freeware packages installed on the PC. (like AVG or Ewido for viruses, and Ad-Aware or SpyBot S&D for spyware.)

if you've got Pinfi, then that can cause some problems with installations too (because of the entry lurking in the TEMP folder). so it might be worth running one of the reputable online malware scans prior to installing the antimalware packages. Symantec has one. (it takes an eternity.)
