iTunes wont open!!

My computer was acting strange so I downloaded an AntiSpyware from McAfee and ever since I ran the program my iTunes wont open. I guess I deleted or "cleaned" all of the files and programs that were potentiall harmful. Did I maybe delete something that I needed in order to open my iTunes? Someone please help. I never backed up any of my music and I don't want to lose it all!!

I'm having the same problem others have mentioned - after months of solid iTunes usage, I now see hourglass for a couple of seconds when I try to launch, then nothing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, including the stand-alone QuickTime. Someone asked earlier about Norton virus software - I do have that. If it's the problem, how do you troubleshoot it so iTunes can launch?

hi Nmcwahine!

a few questions before proceeding.

are you getting an error message? if so, what
does it say? include error message numbers if you're
getting any.

or are you getting no error messages
whatsoever
when you try to launch itunes?

if you're getting no error messages
whatsoever
, do you just see the wee hourglass for
a few seconds, and then nothing? if so, do you also
have Norton Internet Security 2005 installed
on that PC?

or are you seeing a brief "flash" of the itunes
license screen (and then nothing)? if so, do you also
see similar behavior when you try to launch your
QuickTime?

Thank you for responding. I am not getting an error message. I doubl click, hour glass, doesn't open. I tried to re-install or "repair" it and that didn't help. I tried opening my Quicktime and that one flashed the license screen and didn't open... more than I got from itunes. I had McAfree Security Center but my subscription ran out. I downloaded a free anti-spyware tool but it said I had to uninstall my old anti-virus program so I did. I ran the anti-virus and its been since than that itunes hasn't worked. I deleted the anti-spyware and now have no protection.

hi Nmcwahine!

hmmmm. the QT "flash" is consistent with infestation by Qoologic adware. usually with that, folks get an itunes flash too ... but it's not universal. (sometimes if there's multiple adware on the PC, we don't get the itunes flash.)

so let's proceed in the same way we normally would if you were getting an itunes "flash". the free trial version of Ewido has been helping folks clear up this one:

hi cayliel!

let's try an experiment.

head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.

now log out of the old account and log into the new account.

does itunes launch properly from inside the new account?

Hi, anyone got any idea on how to a clean uninstall of quicktime w/o having to meddle with the registry?

Here's where the problem started, I tried installing the latest version of itunes 6 w/ quicktime v.7.1 and the installion ends with a

"error number: 0x080040707 dll function call crashed: QTInstallCode.QuickTimePostInstallProc Setup will now terminate."

So all I got now is an installion of iTunes that won't open, a quicktime installion that ends prematurely and won't open, won't show in uninstall panel so short of meddling with registry entries to get rid of the quicktime entries I really don't know what to do.

I tried uninstalling itunes and manually seeking out quicktime entries within the registry (ouch) and removing the more conspicous ones and tried installing an older version of iTunes (4) to much chagrin.

I'd like to get my iTunes back...
Help anyone?

Thanks! 🙂

hi ubermensch!

"error number: 0x080040707 dll function call crashed: QTInstallCode.QuickTimePostInstallProc Setup will now terminate."

okay, here's what we'll try first. (there's a new variation on this that has been hitting people who have a certain Windows update installed ... we'll check on that if this doesn't work.)

Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

next use the QuickTime component of the complete uninstall instructions in the following document as a guide to a manual removal of leftover QuickTime program files and folders.

Trouble installing iPod, iTunes, or QuickTime software in Windows

once we've got all the existing QuickTime scraped away, let's try a careful standalone QT 7.1 reinstall.

download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.

Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer

if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?

hi ubermensch!

now I'm left with an un-updated windows.. might try to reinstall the update see how that goes.

that would be KB908531?

okay, it's worth a crack on the reinstall. i got a report from one of the folks who had this with 2003 Server that the reinstall rebroke the QT. but i haven't seen this tested with x64 yet. let us know how it turns out.

hi Toko!

Just now I followed about uninstalling Quicktime but i got a message "the following does not exist or is not a valid uninstallation log file.

okay, the "uninstall.log" message usually responds better to brute force than finesse. rather than trying to uninstall QT, just do a careful standalone QT reinstall "over the top" of what you've already got in there.

download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.

Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer

if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?

(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)
