How to uninstall AVG LinkScanner for Mac

After a bit of an ordeal trying to remove AVG LinkScanner for Mac, heres a bit of help.

My trash started prompting me for my password whenever I placed an item in it after installing either AVG LinkScanner or MacKeeper, both of which i have now, at long last, successfully removed.

AVG Link scanner was an absolute nightmare to uninstall. Instead of simply dragging and dropping into the trash like every other application I’ve ever uninstalled, you have to use a separate uninstaller application. After spending 30 minutes on the phone to AVG customer support, who were actually very helpful, I was finally given a link to which I could download the uninstaller.

In the hope that this may save anyone else the headache it gave me, and the time wasted I'm going to supply the link below to which you can download the uninstaller for AVG LinkScanner if like me, you decide it's annoying and you don't actually want it.

To download the LinkScanner uninstaller for Mac OS X, please click on the link below:

If you cannot download the files through the link above, please refer to this website:

Hope this helps.

Thank you for posting this. Using ANY browser on Snow Leopard, it has occasionally started to reject ANY websites which didn't start with "https". My only option has been to restore from Time Machine back to a point where it worked, which was inconvenient at best. I've just had the same symptoms again (https only), but after uninstalling AVG Linkscanner and restarting, it's all working again! Might be too early to prove a connection to be honest, but just thought I'd record it here.

Many thanks.🙂

RobertTweedie, you are a hero and a godsend. Thank you so much for sharing this. I've been trying to get rid of this for the vast majority of my evening (thank God for my Chromecast so I could watch hours of Netflix while I fought with my computer). I found uninstall link after uninstall link that wouldn't run. I'm so glad you shared this one. 10 points to you! I made this support account just so I could thank you!

Hi

Many Many thanks for this solution. I had AVG for Mac installed some time ago and then had problems with my MacBook locking and had it removed "professionally" which solve the problem. In the last few days I install Avast Antivirus software (FREE) but I could not access the web when its Web Shield was active. I contacted Avast technical support at https://support.avast.com/ and after several contacts back and forth they found that the AVG LinkScanner appeared to be still active. I did a Google and found this site and this solution which worked fine. However, as someone else reported, I also had to re-install the LinkScanner program before I could un-install what was lurking on my computer (the install and un-install programs come combined in the link provided by RobertTweedie). I can now access the web with Avast Web Shield active.

It is a pity that AVG causes so many problems on the Mac, as I had been using it for years on a PC without any problems and was extremely happy with it, but now I would not recommend that any one install it on their Mac.

Once again many thanks for the help.

Since upgrading to OS 10.11.1 I had persistent problems with an error report that was impossible to delete for more than ten seconds.

After some hours investigating this (AVG support gave useless advice) I seem to have of have cracked it.

Try this:

Open System preferences.

If, as I did, you find a Linkscanner icon on the bottom row, delete it.

To delete it, control-click on the icon to bring up "Remove....".

Click on that to open panel requiring your password. Enter that and continue.

A panel may appear asking whether to remove associated files. Go for it.

(More passwords may be required before process is completed.)

If you still have the error message on screen, you can now trash it.

Hope this helps - Alec Nisbett

Hello!

I also have the same annoying problem trying to find a way to uninstall AVG Linkscanner on my Mac! I tried to use the links provided above but the first one took me to a page that 'was not found' and the /download-free-all-product site didn't have any reference to linkscanner, only to other AVG products?

Please can anyone offer any advice?? I've tried searching for solutions online and there's been a few more posts where the same link has been posted but it doesn't work as the link appears to no longer exist??

My mac version is 10.11.5 OS X El Capitan

Any advise and help will be much appreciated.

Thank you

Sarah
