It's obvious the Apple lightning cable can't take a lot of abuse and the reason there haven't been and decent 3rd party cables is because Apple was charging an outrageous $20 a piece for licensing. So a good one was either way over priced or not built to Apple's specs and junk.

Fortunately Apple has severely reduced the licensing cost and we are starting to see some high quality 3rd party cables for much less than Apple's own. Just be sure to look for something Apple certified like the EZOpower Lightning Cables and you will be as pleased as I am!

Just heard from a colleague his daughter went through 4 cables. I've had mine for 18 months and haven't heard of such problems nor encountered them. Suggest that the ones people are buying off other sites are inferior quality or down to human error and not handling them properly. I means seriously, you plug it in and out. You could be winding the cable up too tightly or putting too much pressure on the connector!

All a sudden, my iPhone 5's lightning cable started warping. Now it's all exposed at the connector area. Oddly, the top part of the cable keeps compressing together, making the situation worse. It's like out of nowhere the sheath came apart and now it only works by touching and moving it. I haven't had this cable 2 years yet (Nov 2012). Meanwhile, I have several 30pin cables that are anywhere from 4 to 8 yrs old and never had a problem with any of them.

Apple must redesign their lightning cables because they should to last for years, like their older cables, and not months.

I tried using electrical tape after the cable tore and guess what, it made the situation worse. Now I'm getting messages I've never gotten before that say "this accesory may not be supported" Huh? It's an original lightning cable that was bundle with the iPhone 5. If I wiggle the cable, it starts charging again. Now the messages appear all the time so I'm done with it.

Bottom line is, I made the matter worse. I should have just let the cable remain exposed because at least it charged and never gave me that warning message.
