Whilst my two year old was using our ipad the plug exploded, I have the photos if it helps with anything. Why would this happen? I had my home electrics checked they are fine, its 100% genuine factory supplied charger and my ipad and the charger before this were in great shape.

Here are the pictures, as above I couldnt find any pictures of big foot, nessie and a chupacabra eating hot dogs at the family picnic. However I feel this is proof enough, and after a little bit of research this isnt the first one by a long shot.
This justbhappened to me last night. Very scary. Blew plug away from pins. Did you get it sorted?
Where did you buy it from, I got mine from Amazon & on closer inspection was a counterfeit product. I got my money back but Amazon kicked my product review for saying it was a not a genuine product. Will not use Amazon again.
I believe there have been at least one previous posting on these forums about an Apple charger that sparked and failed. It is definitely not a common problem or there would have been many such reports.
Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your charger examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.
If the charger was defective it should be replaced.
You are right there are counterfeit iPad chargers out there.

This happened with my iPod Nano, I just phoned Apple and they replaced it.. 🙂
This kind of this is very rare.
My IPAD charger just did exactly the same thing. Exploded, burnt into the PowerPoint and tripped all our power. I'll post photos shortly. IPAD is now not working.

Rather than waste time taking and posting pictures, take everything to your nearest Apple Store so they can deal with the problem.
Mine has just blown, massive pop and the outer case blew away from the backing. Left the pins in the wall. Genuine charger, came with iPhone5c a few months back.
Must be an English thing, cause my iPad's charger is quite different. Shown below with the "duck's bill" adapter removed and inside the loop of my Mac's NEMA cable adapter.

Called Apple today, I don't have an Apple store near enough to me, they are investigating and want the pictures I took. They asked ALOT of questions, which I'm sure will help them determine the cause.
That's good to hear, I hope you get the problem resolved. Being that this is a user to user forum in matters like chargers catching fire there is little we can to do but hopefully point you in the right direction.
You certainly did, let's hope the outcome is a good one. I'll keep you all posted...
