This has been driving me nuts for years

Has anyone else had this issue, maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Going from Aperture to email is something I do often. Usually I use the "share" menu button and select "email". I do this after selecting a series of images I want to insert into my email.

For whatever reason, the images are never inserted in order. They always come out all over the place and not in the sequence I selected in the Aperture browser. This is problematic when you want to include many pictures, re ordering them in the email is a pain.

The other thing I can do to preserve the order of selection, is drag and drop images into Mac Mail. BUT THEY GET INSERTED WITH NO LINE BREAKS using this method. So your email looks like jigsaw puzzles. Breaking apart all your pictures and adding line breaks is as much fun as getting athlete's foot.

Also, drag and dropping is weird when you want to resize, the resize button never seems to work or acts strangely.

THE OTHER THING, why is there no option in Mac Mail itself to resize individual pictures easily. You can resize all the images not individually. Why not have the option when you select a picture in your email, to size it small, medium, large -- leaving the others the same size.

If I'm missing something here, let me known -- maybe, I'm not doing somthing right.

Any help, appreciated.

One for the Mail forum I would have thought.

Now, do you have the email problem that is discussed above?

Not really; 😁

If I have to send many images at once, I would never send them as inline images anyway; and my correspondents would be very annoyed if I did. And with only a few images to send inline, I prefer to access the Aperture library from the Photo Browser in Mail and to use the stationary forms in Mail to get a pretty layout.

To send many images at once and to preserve the order, I do the the following:

  • Export the images to a folder and use an export preset that creates numbered filenames.
  • Compress the folder and send the zip file.

But a few thoughts to the problem at hand - it looks like the Apple software designers simply do not think the order of images to be important. You have the same problem, when you drag images from an album to a slideshow - don't waste time on ordering the images in the source album, the order will be lost. Worse, in iPhoto albums on your IOS devices there is no way at all to arrange the sequence of images. Or if you sync your album from the mac to your handheld devices using iTunes sync the order will be lost. On IOS the albums are treated as random sets of images and not as carefully arranged sequences of images.

And that is why I think it is very important to send feedback to Apple - I suspect we are not discussing an accidental bug but a software design flaw.

Léonie,

Great answer, thank you again -- you are always spot-on and obviously highly intuitive about what problems people seem to have even though we often fail to elucidate those problems!

Thank you for your many contributions and as you suggest, I will now send a feedback report on this issue.

Sincerely,

Robb

LeoniDF, you are dead on here. Exactly my sentiments, Apple doesn't seem to care about order of selection at all.

BTW, if I was sending a lot of images I would do as you suggest, but there are numerous situations when you want to send only 6 or 7 pictures and time is an issue. I don't know of a faster way to send them, than by drag and dropping them into an email or with the "share to email" button.

I experimented with "Share to email" - it seems to sort by version name. If you prefix your version names with a counter email will send them in this order, but that would be more bother than to arrange them in the mail by dragging.

It is not consistent across applications what will happen, when you share or sync sorted albums and events from iPhoto or Aperture. As TD said initially, in this case it is a Mail "problem". It would help, if all Apple products would treat the sorting of shared image selections, albums, or projects in a consistent way.

Just look at this article: iOS: Understanding photo sorting http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4221

By default photos will be sorted by "date modified", sometimes like sorted in Aperture or iPhoto, or Date taken, or File name, depending on the version of IOS.

It is much simpler, to expect a random sort and not to rely on any sorting at all. 😁

Good idea, I'll send feedback regarding this as well.

I'm glad I'm not the only one annoyed with this. I think it's particularly bothersome to a lot of Aperture users because it's something we do quite often (Aperture to email) and it seems a relatively easy fix, feature to incorporate (selected pictures, order maintained).

As I stated, I'm kind of surprised that Apple hasn't at some point, during some Aperture version or update looked at this little email sharing issue and said "hey, here's something we can improve on".
