I don't have an option on my phone to update software, and when I'm connected to iTunes and select update, (under my phone) it says that my iTunes is up to date? How do I do this? I have the iPhone 4

Scroll down to the section entitled "Update your device using iTunes"
Where do I find this? On my phone? Or on Itunes?
Sorry, I quoted the wrong support article. The information regarding upgrading using the computer is in the you linked from. Included below for easy access.
I read all of that before, when I plug my phone in, that doesn't come up that I am in need of an update..... That's why I'm not sure how to go about it if it's not coming up on it's own. Does that make sense!?
Which version of iTunes?
Which computer operating system?
Which iOS on the iPhone now?
It's a mac, not sure what software, iTunes 10.6.1 and phone says 4.3.1.
I believe you need at least iTunes 10.6.3 to upgrade the phone to the next step. However, this may be a problem if you are running OS 10.5.8 or lower. You will need at least Snow Leopard (10.6.8) as you Mac Operating System.
Ok! That would make sense then. Do you know how I would get that?!
Depending on your computer and the existing operating system, you may need to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD at the link below. But first check which OS you have on the computer. Click the Apple in the top left corner and select "About this Mac" post back with Version number and Processor information.

Mac OS X 10.5.8. Exactly what you guessed!
Hopefully your Mac is capable of running Snow Leopard. The link above should help determining that.
So Lion wouldn't help me with my updates? It's snow leopard that I would need?
You may be able to run Lion, but you must have Snow Leopard before you can do further upgrades.

This is the info, would Snow Leopard be compatable?

Yes, indeed it will run Snow leopard, and even Mountain Lion (Snow Leopard first though). You will need more RAM tough, as Mountain Lion requires 2gB, but 4 or 6 gB would be better. It is the same model as mine, which has recently been upgraded to Mountain Lion (10.8).
